[Win32] VM Update

Folks, As already announced before I've updated the Win32 VM with some new stuff. Besides lots of cosmetic changes in the source code there are a couple of interesting things for all of you Win32 users such as: * UDP now works (finally!) [and with the latest updates there is also the image support for UDP sockets] * Wheel mouse support [which should now run on all different Win32 versions, but needs the CTRL-Up/Down support Bert posted] * Squeak running in a browser Experimental support for basically 'wrapping' Squeak inside a web browser [ Look at http://isgwww.cs.uni-magdeburg.de/~raab/squeak/plugin/ ] * Startup changes If there is no image name given or the image is not there Squeak now tries to find the image file automatically (by searching for exactly one image file in the start directory) and if this fails prompts the user with a file open dialog. * Better Windows CE support The latest Windows CE executables have support for sound, networking (untested though!), the 2D and 3D Balloon engine, and all of the color depths. The VMs for SH3 and MIPS based devices can be found at http://isgwww.cs.uni-magdeburg.de/~raab/squeak/WindowsCE/ [Running Squeak-Alice on a Mobilon Tripad from Sharp is quite fun - but pretty slooooow] * Fixes to image save stuff (which prevented the image file from getting smaller) * ... and the missing directory delete primitive ;-) The executable itself can be downloaded from http://isgwww.cs.uni-magdeburg.de/~raab/squeak/SqueakExe.zip or the full package (including the latest updates) from http://isgwww.cs.uni-magdeburg.de/~raab/squeak/Squeak.zip I've also updated the sources which can be found at http://isgwww.cs.uni-magdeburg.de/~raab/squeak/src/Win32Sources.zip Have fun! First off, in VW define ClassDescription & UndefinedObject class #methodsFor:stamp as '^ self methodsFor: arg'. The stamp is not useable in VW. But then, you may have problems with other things, apparently the hyperlinks in the comments and source code. These require removal by hand, but it is quite possible that other Squeakers are aware of easy ways to prevent these from showing up in the sources, or perhaps in generating a VW-compatible chunk-style fileout format. les

Obscuring the cursor while you type

For those who want the cursor out of sight while you type, a filein is attached. If the keyboard focus responds true to #wantsObscuredCursor (the filein specifies such for TextMorphForEditView), then the cursor goes away when a keystroke occurs and reappears when a mouse event occurs. That's a long-standing problem for me, too. Many Mac programs make the mouse pointer disappear once one starts to type - it reappears as soon as the mouse moves a bit. When I did some Windows work a few years ago, I *learned* to throw the mouse so I could see what I was typing. Continuing that in Squeak causes much typing going nowhere. I think I will experiment with hiding the cursor so I can *unlearn* the venerable mouse throw. Cheers, Bob

Squeak for Windows CE

Hi, What's the status of the Windows CE port ? Has anybody used it sucessfully on those new Palmpilot sized Windows CE devices ? I'm asking this because a few days ago I've ordered a HP Jornada 420 (http://www.hp.com/jornada/) :-) I would need a version compiled for Hitachi processors. I am curious precisely what it is you are trying to accomplish that requires this feature? Currently, PWS is a class-side application. Close inspection reveals that PWS class is a web server, whereas a PWS instance is actually an HTTP request. Thus, yes, only one PWS per image is possible. I'm currently working on restructuring the PWS to support, among other things, multiple servers per image. One trick to run multiple PWS's is to subclass it.
