Cert advisory CA-2000-02 Malicious HTML Tags Embedded in Client Web Requests

A web site may inadvertently include malicious HTML tags or script in a dynamically generated page based on unvalidated input from untrustworthy sources. This can be a problem when a web server does not adequately ensure that generated pages are properly encoded to prevent unintended execution of scripts, and when input is not validated to prevent malicious HTML from being presented to the user. Advisory may be found at: http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2000-02.html Should we react to this with respect to the Squeak Swiki regarding <SCRIPT> tags?

Mac filetype (was Re: Type Safety (was Re: fun and empowerment))

Hi, The bit of the problem that I'm trying to solve is the "my file was munged when I downloaded it and stuffit expander on a non mac platform was too helpful." I'll guess that this could be solved by making the file types not TEXT in the upload bundles. I wonder if the C runtime library isn't setting the file types for the sources and changes files. I poked a bit yesterday and it seems that the #setMacFileNamed:type:creator: is used for images, but I may have missed its use for the images or changes files. That's a bug in your graphics drivers. The error message should actually mean something that is *really* problematic (if SetDIBitsToDevice fails it means you shouldn't see anything at all in Squeak) but it seems that the returned value from the function is pretty much random. And the error message even more so - according to the documentation it is set when the function returns an error code but I've never seen a meaningful message here. Sigh. I'll probably just remove the error check... Andreas

Sadly of course, a new syntax doesn't always break peoples mental models and make them build a new one. I see so much C written in Smalltalk that it's not funny. And I'm not counting the deliberately C-like style of the VM code. </rant> tim

[ANN] distribution of Squeak programs

People have talked about distributing stand-alone Squeak programs, and often the talk turns to self-extracting executables. I don't think that self-extracting executables are the core of the problem. Instead, there is simply a myriad of administrative work that must be done to create a standalone package for multiple platforms. Anyway, to try and focus the discussion in this direction, I have put a tiny distribution of a Towers of Hanoi solver at: http://chaos.resnet.gatech.edu:8000/~lex/hanoi/ Linux and Windows people, let me know what you think! I'll try and add more platforms over time. Eventually, most of this could be automated, but it seems useful to have one example of doing it the hard way. Lex

Hi, Of course, things would work better if we'd change the file types on the .sources and .changes files to something other than 'TEXT' in terms of unexpanding them. Does this break anything else in the system? So, does someone have a good idea for the type to use? I tried a search on apple.com and wasn't sucessful beyond the table in http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/mac/Toolbox/Toolbox-447.html. There seems to be a product called TCDB at http://tcdp.tripod.com. Apple, according to http://devworld.apple.com/dev/cftype/ doesn't register the types any more.
