Hi Andrew. I've just tested the install script on a fresh 4542 image, and it seems to work fine. It's where Stef said - there's an install script. There's a commented portion to integrate the RB as your default browser and put both it and the Lint in the Flaps (thanks Ned!). If you want to use it, you need to add a period to the last line before it, and reinit your Flaps after installation. Let me know about any niggles you find, in the installation or elsewhere... [BUG] ZipTool problems

I was just trying to use the ZipTool to open the Windows VM source code zip file (Squeak3.1Alpha6Src.zip) and ran into two problems. I am running on Windows 2000 using the Windows 31alpha6 VM, and the most recent alpha image. (1) ZipTool can not open a readonly zip file. If I try, I get a walk back. I made the zip file writable and was able to move on. (2) When I extract this zip file, I get a number of top level directories, but all of the files get written into the top level directory with their pathnames embedded into each individual file name. A partial file list directory is included below. SUnit Testing merged with Examples for Methods

Folks, SUnits are a style of testing that verify the operation of a list of specific methods. The structure for SUnits has been in Squeak for a while, but only forty (40) out of 44,000 methods actually have a validating test. I have embarked on a radical program to improve that. Here is how I have changed things: [ ] To test a method, you needs to make up a receiver, arguments, and a known answer. Scott Wallace is introducing an "Instance Browser" to Squeak that shows you an example receiver and arguments for each method. It lets you run the example. But, where are we going to get the example receivers and arguments for a method shown in an Instance Browser? They can be the same as for a test of the method. I have written code that generates objects that can be used for *either* an SUnit test, or an example method call. [ ] Another thing that should be associated with each method is some "type information". This is the protocol that each argument object needs to respond to. The same mechanism that produces a test case can store this info also. [ ] In classic SUnits, there is a separate 'testing class' for each class in Squeak. This would double the number of classes, and is too much overhead. I have created a new subclass of TestCase that owns a Verifier. Verifier is a subclass MessageSend that holds the answer that the method is supposed to produce. Object #() MessageSend #('receiver' 'selector' 'arguments') MethodCall #('lastValue' 'methodInterface' 'timeStamp') Verifier #('desiredAnswer' 'passed') VerifierOfProperty #('theTest') I have made a subclass of TestCase that holds a Verifier. A TestSuite of these behaves like a normal test suite, and does not do too much violence to the careful design of SUnits. [ ] A Verifier can only test (a) whether a method returns the correct value and (b) whether it gets an error while running. A VerifierOfProperty tests for a specific state change after a method has run. Classic SUnits allow other kinds of assertions and tests. Except for verifying that a method produces a certain kind of error in a certain case, a series of VerifierOfProperty can test everything that a classic TestCase can. [ ] To collect the test cases, I simply enumerate the implementors of #exampleFor:, and call each one with 'all'. That returns a list of Verifiers, which are run as test cases. [ ] The SUnit code comes with a TestRunner user interface. Say TestRunner open and click on Run All. After you have my update, the TestCase called TestViaMethodCall collects and runs all tests that are created with #exampleFor:. (One drawback is that when a method has more than one test, the individual subtests are not named. We could give them names in the future.) These changes will be in the next batch of external updates. If you can't wait, ask me for the file now. I invite you to supply an example for any method by implementing #exampleFor: in some class. (In the future, we'd like to have the kind of TestCases that SUnit has now, but not have the overhead of doubling the number of classes. One way to do this is to make Metaclass do everything that TestCase does. The individual testing methods would begin with a standard prefix like 'textSU'. Any class that has a method whose name begins with 'textSU' would be found by TestRunner, and entered into its list. [BUG] Something locks up when trying to print

Since 3.2 seems imminent, I have a bug to report which is pretty serious in my view. Sometimes when my code tries to write to the Transcript, nothing will happen. IIRC, when pressing cmd-. to interrupt, from the text in the debugger window it turns out that there is a Weak-soemthing-or-other or a semaphore (or something to that effect, my memory is not very clear on this) that is holding a lock on some entity and that prevents things from happening. The bad part is that now you are in trouble. This thingy will at this point hold a lock to stop many things, including the shutdown cycle, which means that the only way to exit Squeak is to force-terminate it from the OS. Sorry, I haven't been able to reproduce this so I don't have any better info than that. It seems to involve the Transcript almost all of the time, but I think I've had it occur elsewhere too. I also looked through the recent change sets but didn't find any obvious candidates. My hunch is that this happened around the switch to 3.2a somewhere. But surely someone else must have noted this problem? Henrik

ok, got it. thanks for the many ways. grabbing the widget and dropping it on the rhs of an assignment seems most direct. my problem was that (apparently) inspecting a widget doesn't yield a straightforward specification of how to refer to it. [VM][Simulator] InterpreterSimulator broken?

Dear Squeakers, I have problems with the InterpreterSimulator. The InterpreterSimulator>>testBecome hasn't been successful yet. #become:with:twoWay: works for the created arrays, but *not* for the values on the stack. I have played with a modified VM, but since it doesn't work, I have tried the simulator. After faced with the problem described here with my modified VM I tried the normal one, but there is the same problem :-(( I'd like to know, which are my and which are other errors... Does InterpreterSimulator>>testBecome work for somebody? Does anybody know this problem? Hi all, It seems it's getting hard to build the Jpeg2Plugin for several people. If you want to build it for your platform, read on. Please go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/squeak/message/36853 and get the latest version of the plugin. The JPEGReadWriter2Plugin class comment says: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- This work is a Squeak VM Plugin version of LibJPEG. You can read more about it at www.ijg.org In addition to the code generated from this class, the plugin uses the following files (from LibJPEG ver. 6b): Error.c jerror.c jcmarker.c ... several other files.c ------------------------------------------------------------- In order to compile the plugin you need to: 0) File in the new change set 1) Do JPEGReadWriter2Plugin writeSupportFiles 2) Do JPEGReadWriter2Plugin translate 3) Get all those C files from www.ijg.org 4) Compile all that together into a dll, .so or shared library I don't think you need the full sources of the VM. That would only be needed to build an internal plugin. You need to write your make or configure file. Just include in it all those C files.
