CVS? SF? cvs.squeakfoundation.org? Confusion! :)

Hiya all! After using Ian's 3.7b-5 sources (works kinda fine) I decided to instead use the CVS sources from SF. But I kept getting a weird error on checkout - which apparently others get too (permission denied about creating some /tmp/cvs-yaddayadda directory - on the server that is). And then Ken, Cees and I got chatting on IRC about the CVS move to sqf. And Cees said - he has rigged CVS. Fine! So I thought - perhaps we should take the chance and make the move. But hey! What do I find? It seems someone has already made the move (the proper way too it seems - copying the RCS files, not just checkout/checkin)! But... who? And more importantly - do people KNOW? :) So if anyone has any good answers to the above - please enlighten us. IF the move has been done properly - then we need to shut down SF ASAP - because otherwise we end up in a MESS. regards, Göran PS. And of course - thanks to anyone who did it. I dragged a curve, embedded a text into it and selected the textWrap to bounds item of the text and boum.... [BUG HUNT!]ImageSegment loading troubles revisited

Hi Ian and all! I have been posting incoherently about having trouble loading ImageSegments :) - but then "zpg" (can't remember name, sorry) appeared on IRC and had the exact same issue on OpenBSD! The issue is that primitive 99 fails, which is called in ImageSegment>>loadSegmentFrom:outPointers: and which is defined in Interpreter>>primitiveLoadImageSegment. "zpg" dug into gdb and managed to track it down to the two calls to #oopHasAcceptableClass: (which btw, is only called from this method) - if he commented them out it worked. But that is of course not a solution. ;) I then proceeded to look at that code and noticed that it relies on instvar endOfMemory, this triggered me into testing if running squeak with "-memory 30m" changed anything - and sure, then it works! So... all you VM gurus out there. What the heck is going on? Ian? Help!! :) Noteworthy: I use GCC 3.3.3, but zgp uses 2.95 something. I run Linux 2.6.7, he uses OpenBSD. I have tried both 3.6 VM, 3.7b-5 VM, and the precompiled 3.6 VM, same results. I have also tried recompiling (many times) the VM without any optimization whatsoever - no difference. I actually think this may have something to do with how the 2.6 kernel (and OpenBSD?) handles memory layout or something. A bit weird that only we have stumbled on this. regards, Göran PS. Important Dates --------------------- Deadline for submissions: August 16, 2004. Notification of Acceptance: September 10, 2004. Theme and Goals ------------------------ In industry, static languages (such as Java, C++ and C\#) are much more widely used than their dynamic counterparts (like CLOS, Python, Self or Smalltalk). So it appears as though dynamic language concepts were forgotten and have lost the race. But this is not the case. Java and C\#, the latest mainstream static languages, popularized to a certain extent dynamic language features such as garbage collection, portability and (limited forms of) reflection. In the near future, we expect this dynamicity to increase even further. E.g., it is getting clearer year after year that pervasive computing is becoming the rule and that concepts such as meta programming, reflection, mobility, dynamic reconfigurability and distribution are becoming increasingly popular. All of these features are the domain of dynamic languages, and hence it is only logical that more dynamic language concepts have to be taken up by static languages, or that dynamic languages can make a breakthrough. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers in (object-oriented) language design interested in dynamic language features and languages that do not fit into the static mainstream. Call for contributions ---------------------------- Areas of interests include, but are not limited to • closures • delegation • actors, active objects • prototype-based languages and approaches • mixins and traits • reflection and meta-programming • language symbiosis and multi-paradigm languages • ... In Brief: we welcome position statements, both about new language(s) (features) as well as about existing ones that already cover solutions for problems that are currently getting relevant in mainstream languages. We encourage brand new ideas, even though they have not been tried and proven yet. It is a workshop, not a conference, so work in progress is accepted. We expect... • a statement to bring dynamism to an existing OOPL, or • a proposal for completely new features/languages, or • experience reports on dynamic features, to learn what works/does not work in current-day development, or • killer applications making use of dynamic features, or • descriptions of interactions between different dynamic features and/or OO concepts, or • anything else related to dynamicity in (OO) PLs Prospective attendees are requested to submit a position statement or an essay (max 5 pages) on a topic relevant to the workshop to Roel Wuyts (Roel.Wuyts(a)ulb.ac.be) no later than August, 16. Undeclared in 3.7beta: 'cards' in SMSqueakMap>>deleteCard:

Was just checking the Undeclared dictionary in 3.7beta before going gamma... Doing 'Undeclared removeUnreferencedKeys; inspect' shows one undeclared variable: #cards. After searching for the reference to this (by brute force/'method source with it', is there an easier way?), it looks like it's in SMSqueakMap>>deleteCard:, which refers to the nonexistent variable #cards. So, it'd be nice to clean this up. It might be easiest to fix it the 3.7beta update stream, and then also fix it in the next release of SqueakMap. (as long as we don't forget to fix it in the SM release) - Doug

I've had no problems emailing, though I had to use an inspector to turn on SMTP authentication. We really need a UI to maintain the MailAccount. There are still some email messages with attachments that Celeste doesn't parse properly. It seems to me that this version of the UI gets more confused than the last when these errors occur.
