Projects seem to work too although I'd be a little more cautious with them. The problem is not in the serializatino or materialization, its the *initialization* that must occur. Several of the projects in 3.7Full image all work and part of the Magma test cases: - client2 expunges several projects ("Fun with Music", "Smalltalk introduction", "Fun with Morphic", etc.) - client1 persists these projects in the database - I am then able to retrieve and access the projects in client2. Not directly, but you are right for some reason the FTP daemon also did not start. I've started it now so it should be fine. Also, don't forget you can use both http://ftp.squeak.org/ and ftp://ftp.squeak.org/ and even though the second wasn't working, the first was. Today I spend some time to read and understand an old mail from Andreas (http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2005- October/096370.html) about having a parallel metaclass hierarchy. I really like this. Thanks Andreas!! Unix VM Lockups

Hello all. I am having a problem with the Squeak VM running on Linux 2.6.11 with an SMP kernel (2 real processors appears to the OS to be 4 via Hyper- Threading ). The image is running a fairly active Seaside application. The application runs an external process very often (convert). It also access an external file after the external process completes. `lsof | grep squeak | wc -l` usualy returns a number around 120. The squeak version is 3.7-7 #1 Wed Oct 26 17:11:21 EDT 2005 gcc 3.4.3 Squeak3.7 of '4 September 2004' [latest update: #5989] The image will lockup (or start responding slowly) `top` reports 99.x % CPU usage. Opening the process browser will show the "UI process" taking up about 60% and the event tickler taking up the remaining. The UI process appears to be using so much process time because of the process browser. During the normal running of the application only a workspace is open. The web application will slow way down. From almost instantaneous. to 5 sec plus. Restarting (save and quit and reopening the image) will restore the application back to it's speedy self. An expectable level of speed will last for about 2 to 3 days. If the image is "doing nothing" the Squeak image will then hang around 50% CPU time. As soon as someone access a page the image will freeze for a second or two. Has anyone experienced this sort of issue ? Is there any known resolution or steps I could take to eliminate the problem? Environment?

Hi. I see this class hierarchy: ...IdentityDictionary etc. SystemDictionary Environment SmalltalkEnvironment What are they? I understand that #Smalltalk of class SystemDictionary is a singleton and a global variables holder, used by the compiler to add Associations pointing to global variables in method dictionaries for classes. But Environment? When was it made? What were the original intentions? Does it work and is it stable and safe to use? And what is SmalltalkEnvironment used for? It appears to be an uncommented empty class. I'm trying to create a secure, segregated Smalltalk environment in my image where remotely loaded code has no references to objects that I don't want it to have (aka "capabilities" ala the E language). Mikevdg.
