Logging improvements

Hello All, 1. LogTranscript - a minimal log to transcript back end included and used as default. 2. No longer depends on Kernel-Extensions or Null. (Only use Null if you want to remove Logging from a minimal image which still has log calls) 3. LogEngine adaptor now included. to install: Installer install: 'Logging'. regards Keith

Android and Squeak

Has anyone looked into porting Squeak to Android? I've been going over some of the documentation and the videos and, from the outside, it looks like Google is keeping access to the kernel (etc.) closed. To me, it looks like they have forced developers to use java, and only java, for application development. They've created an Eclipse plugin to make it easy to write/debug/emulate java apps. But, no where did I find the ability to treat the system like any other embedded linux system - e.g. run gcc Is that what others have found? Or, did I miss something? brad -- Brad Fuller

About Refactoring Core

Hi: I used to use Refactoring Browser. On newest images (as 3.10.2) I found the "Refactoring Core" package to install, with the comment that has not browser included. mac carbon VM Squeak 3.8.20beta1U.app ships for testing.

I've stuck a Squeak 3.8.20beta1U.app.zip file in my EXPERIMENTAL folder found via http://www.smalltalkconsulting.com/squeak.html This test VM contains the latest 32/64 bit integer fetch/set logic & fixes, Alien support and the Alien (IA32ABI) plugin, along with misc fixes to the VM consolidated by Tim and integrated into VMMaker by David T. Lewis in the last few months. If you want to explore Alien then you need this VM and it's plugin to continue. Hint if someone would like to run some benchmarks and compare Alien versus FFI calls that would be good. I note the Alien plugin is macintel only, no powerpc at this time (got funding?) -- = = = ======================================================================== John M. Better VM <-> plugin API

I was pretty unhappy with some places in VM, where it loads a function from plugin by calling ioLoadFunction... Also, even more painful to see when one plugin wants to call another plugin function. IMO things would be much better , if we formalize these things in VM. An idea is simple and easy to implement: We need only few functions implemented in VM: sqInt makeAtom(char * name); "registers new atom or returns id of already existing one" sqInt registerService (sqInt atom, void * service); "associate a value with service id" sqInt unregisterService(sqInt atom); "clear association with service id (make value=0)" And finally, void * getService(sqInt atom); Now, plugins first, should declare the atoms they would want to use or provide. This can be done once at plugin initialization stage, for instance: static sqInt bitBlitAtom = makeAtom('ioBitBlt'); Now, after acquiring atom, plugin can register a service fn under this atom: registerService(bitBlitAtom, (void*) bitBlt); and upon unloading unregisterService(bitBlitAtom); now, any other plugin can do: bitBltFn = getService(bitBlitAtom); if (bitBltFn) { bitBltFn( a, b,c blabla); } VM maintains a simple list of atom values and list of atom names and their numeric correspondence. [Help] Announcements List Moderators Needed

Do you have 15-30 minutes per week you can spare? Have you been observing this community for a while and have gained a strong mental map of names of community participants and projects? If so then we need you. The Announcements list is a major spam magnet. Just as a rough guess I would say we receive on the order of 1000 spam per each valid submission. The list is fully moderated and to keep up with this volume of spam the list has to be moderated regularly. If you accepted this job you would: 1. Start receiving far more spam in the form of announcements list moderation requests. The spam would be in the form of attachment to each request and the emails themselves have a standard format, so would be easy to filter out. 2. Carefully look through the announcement moderation requests at each opportunity (hopefully at least once a day) looking for valid submissions. Realistically you can just scan the subjects which include the email address of the submitter. In all likelihood you will recognize an email address for a valid submission and then look at the message itself to confirm. All list moderators would get all messages and so missing one is no great problem as one of the other moderators would probably catch it. If you find a valid submission you would login to the moderation interface (web-based) and search for and accept only that submission, leaving the rest of the moderation queue. 3. Once or twice a week (schedule to be determined and depends on number of volunteers) you would scan through the entire moderation queue for valid messages. In this case the easiest information to spot is the subject and so you would be looking for names of projects and relevant keywords. Mark each valid submission (if any) and then submit the entire moderation queue having all the spam deleted automatically. This is a largely thankless and annoying job. Very few announcements are sent to the announcements list yet. I wish I knew why and what to do about it. All I know to do at this point is be patient, and I'm asking you to assist me in this and cut down on the volume of messages I have to scan. Thank you, Ken Causey

Latest trunk (1954) and a clean svn checkout. I tried to make the latest vm under unix and received the following errors. stability of Web Frameworks?

Ok, in the follow line to Smalltalk and Web. I wonder what experiences there are with the stability of Web Framweworks from the viewpoint of a user of this Frameworks. Let's ask it the otherway. if I have some Seaside 2.3 and upgrade to 2.8 (somehow) will it break my old applications? The same of course for AidaWeb, how much work must I expect if a new version comes around. In the same line of question. How long are the versions maintained and are bugs still fixed or not? Here the abstract implementation of proxy which could catch any messages except those, which handled by VM directly, like #class. You can implement own proxy by subclassing MessageCatchingProxy and providing own implementation of #handleMessage:forProxy: I'm not sure, if it should be in 'Kernel-Methods'. I just thinking that it could be quite useful to people who need proxies or different message catching techniques, because it provides a really clean message catching comparing to any proxy which is subclass of ProtoObject or Object, because such kind of proxies can't cleanly intercept messages implemented in those classes without completely overriding them: ProtoObject methodDict size 35 Object methodDict size 454 -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.
