Monticello UndefinedObject>>flush

When I move a 3.9 image in a remote server, and then if I update my classes code in this image from a SqueakSource Monticello repository I always get this error message from Monticello: UndefinedObject>>flush The error come quite close the end of the code update. The image was previously on my desktop from where the code update works fine. This problem is repeatable, so I am pretty sure I am doing something wrong, but I don't know where is my error. Thanks a lot to help because this is killing me! Hilaire

I get this error when loading a mcz into Damien's 3.9.1 web image. The MCClassDefinition happens to be a trait, not sure if that has anything to do with it. Any suggestion? Sorting a tree of classes ( was Properties of "<" ... ) [squeak-dev] Properties of "<" in SortedCollection>>#sortBlock - reflexive, symmetric, transitive required? Hi Milan, Squeak is often much simpler than you think. A sort block is only required to answer true or false. True means a sorts before b and false vice-versa. So the questions you raise are side stepped. How do you intend to deal with siblings? (Classes that have the same parent?). Can you associate a tree level with each class? (the lowest level has no children the next level only children from the lower etc.) The sort would be highest level first then next highest etc.) If two classes are at the same level then you would use the second sort criterion. [ :each :eachOther | each level = eachOther level ifTrue: [ "...secondary search" ] ifFalse: [ each level < eachOther level ] . where level accessing the tree level which you will probably have to compute beforehand. Something like: youngerClasses := OrderedCollection new . unOrderedClasses := OrderCollection new withAll: myClasses . [ unOrderedClasses isEmpty ] whileFalse: [ | thisLevel | thisLevel := unOrderClasses select: [ :each | each child isNil or: [ youngerClasses includes: each child ] ] . unOrderedClasses removeAll: thisLevel . youngerClasses addAll: thisLevel . ] of course at this point the reverse of the youngerClasses list will be a reasonable load order. This is pseudo-code. You have to fill in the missing pieces. You would have to define #child or find the right method to express it. Ditto #level. I also don't guarantee the other methed selectors I used to be exactly the right names. I am just conveying the jist of a solution. Properties of "<" in SortedCollection>>#sortBlock - reflexive, symmetric, transitive required?

Hi, Is the "<" opertaion in SortedCollection>>#sortBlock required to be reflexive, symmetric and transitive ? I have a set of classes with known parent class and try to sort them so they install into the image in the right order (parent first). The obvious "<" implementation of parent < child may not be enough because it not transitive unless I do some more sophisticated manipulation (I only immediate descendant relationship).. The sortBlock documentation provides no help on this... Thanks Milan

Browsers slow in 3.9? Don't use rounded window corners.

Hello, several people have observed slow browser behavior in version 3.9, in particular that browsers get slower the more of them you open [1]. Benchmarks showed that things were faster in 3.8 [2]. Jerome Peace narrowed it down to 3.9 alpha, between 6684 and 6686. I have seen the slowdownn disappear when switching off rounded window corners in my 3.9.1 dev image, see [1] for details. So for now, if you want faster screen updates with multipe browsres open, do not use rounded window corners: Preferences disable: #roundedWindowCorners. thanks to everyone who helped with this. Is DNU cached?

If obj foobar. looksup #foobar and fails with DNU, will the next obj foobar repeat the foobar, or is the DNU cached so no repeat lookup (unless cache invalidated)? Is it likely to be the same in e.g. Gemstone ST? Thanks - Sophie

Dear Squeakers, welcome to this edition of The WeeklySqueakSummary, an irregular traffic-dependent report on what's going on in the world of Squeak based on the WeeklySqueak blog. This is, by the way, the first edition that is also sent to the AIDA mailing list - thanks for the invitation! Highlights of the past weeks: Hilaire Fernandes is writing a series of blog entries that introduce Squeak specifically to educators [10]. Material of this kind is extremely welcome and much needed! Two announcements have come true: first, Gilad Bracha's talk on Newspeak, which he gave at HPI in Potsdam, is now available online [7] (some trouble with viewing have been reported, but with a recent player and no over-zealous firewall, viewing should be no problem). Second, the Seaside tutorial hosted at HPI has been turned into a book, which is finally available (the first book on Seaside, yay, and please forgive the author his personal pride) [8]. Finally, there's three technical items. Squeak is now available on yet another platform, namely the Syllable OS [4]. At the time of posting, only headless images were supported, but it ran Seaside. JavaConnect and JNIPort [12] are two projects that support Smalltalk/Java interoperability in very elegant ways. While they are currently available only on VisualWorks (and, as for JNIPort, Dolphin), they set standards in terms of language/platform connectivity. SqueakFS [13] allows for browsing the Squeak image as a mounted file system (on Mac OS X and Linux, using the FUSE library). The top-level directory supports looking at the image along one of three axes: along the class hierarchy, grouped by class category, and as a flat space containing all classes. At present, it's read-only, but future extensions are already being planned. How can I count redraws of SystemWindows?

Hello, I am trying to find out why browsers get slower when you open more of them in Squeak 3.9 (see previous emails). One theory is that hidden browsers are redrawn. I'd like to test that by making a note on the Transcript every time a browser window gets redrawn. I have tried to override SystemWindow>>fullRedrawOn: aCanvas. Unfortunately, the image locks up when I try to accept a non-trivial variation. I have tried e.g. fullDrawOn: aCanvas super fullDrawOn: aCanvas self title. "Hangs." Sometimes I am able to accept more complicated variants of this, but invariably I ended up with a hanging mage. I have tried to write to transcript only if I am inside certain type of window, in order to avoid redrawing loops for the transcript window. That failed because I ws not able to accept these variants of fullDrawOn:. Anything else I can try to count redraws? Cheers Matthias

[squeak-dev] Re: Debugging slow browsers I don't have the ability (or permissions) to upload it. It was once in the directory of 3.9 images so someone might have a restorable copy. Possibly Ken Causey who did the clean up of the directories. If that doesn't pan out, write me privately with your snailmail address and I'll make you a cd with that image.
