Squeak News Team Report - April 2008

Hello All, This is your monthly News report for April 2008. The purpose of the News Team is to publish news regarding Squeak and Smalltalk development and use. It aims to provide a service to the Squeak community, highlighting anything which Squeak users may find interesting in The Weekly Squeak newszine. It will also try to promote Squeak and Smalltalk outside its own community, by submitting articles and news items to mainstream websites such as Slashdot and OSNews. We had 11,972 direct page views for the month of April, this is slightly down from March, but better than the figure for the same month last year. In total, ten articles were posted. Giving Authors Co-Maintainership of SqueakMap Packages

There has been some recent discussion of opening up access to editing the data on SqueakMap. As a small conservative step in that direction I intend to ensure that specified authors have access to update package entries. I will go through all the packages and anywhere an author is specified that is not currently a maintainer I will add the author as a co-maintainer assuming I can find a SqueakMap account for the author. If you are the owner of a package and for some reason have a problem with this policy please let me know. It will be at least a few days before I do this since I am dealing with broken packages first. Ken

Web Team Report - May, Jun 2008

Dear Squeakers, This is a monthly report about Web Team activities for May and Jun 2008. Web Team main responsibility is to maintain our main public face: the http://www.squeak.org website. In May we started three reorganizations and corrections of website: - moving Board page to Community instead Foundation, to be more visible and on the place where anyone expect to be first. We proposed the move to the Board and end goal was that they started with renaming themself. We are now waiting for that phase to finish. - Press Room section and duplication with News team Weekly Squeak blog. This page was initiated by the PR team and is meant to be a place for press releases. Current press releases are quite old already, so we hope that PR team will be more up to date and to somehow separate the form of their releases from News team. - the Teams page was cleaned up so that all information is now up to date There were also some minor corrections of broken links and few answers to questions that came from public e-mail on Contact Us page. In June there weren't much activity except cleaning the spam coming from the public e-mail. What I hope in July is to finally choose technology and finish the upgrade of our website. Q CodeLoader wont load my mcz files

CodeLoader refuses to load my mcz files from squeaksource and other repositories. The mcz files are created from 3.8 Squeak and Croquet (Cobalt) images. What should I do to make these mcz files loadable? [ANN] SqueakLightII.7188 is ready

I proud announce the alpha version is ready at http://ftp.squeak.org/various_images/SqueakLight/SqueakLightII.7188.zip This comes with a Welcome and Extra Bonus windows and could load some useful stuff. Off course also fun stuff ! This image could be easily updated from previous. As still evaluating which Monticello version should be in, in this saved image I stick to old trusted Ralph version of 3.10. No 7182Monticello-edc.3.sqz into, but any could go to files and load for have Monticello 1.6 beta of Matthew. >From the image you could read any news I put in the swiki http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/6056 Remember, run but is alpha. Peter, betting "All-in" is easy. Winning is something else. Criticizing is easy. Let's see the cards now! I've seen plently of Igor's code/papers/discussions/ideas, i.e REAL stuff... Now, it's your turn to go "all-in" ! What about Zoku Peter??? Will it support multi-core, native, "non-green" threads/processes ??? Any roadmap? Any ideas, plans, whatever? Any demo? Beyond theorical ideas, anything to refute Igor's ideas? I don't mind "ideas bashing." when the opponents have something to prove/show/discuss... I wouldn't mind arguing with Vassili Bykov, Elliott Miranda, Dan Ingalls, Matthew Fullmer, Stéhane Ducasse and a lot of others (sorry guys if you're not in the enumeration) but sometimes, being silent is the best solution when you've got nothing to add/prove to the discussion. Karatsuba multiplication in a plugin using slang, is it doable ?

Karatsuba algorithm is a simple divide and conquer algorithm to fast up LargeInteger multiplications which is worth above a few thousand bits. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karatsuba_algorithm). I would like to implement it in the LargeIntegersPlugin, But: - the algorithm is recursive - it will create short-lived LargeIntegers at each recursion So that makes me wonder if it is really doable in a plugin in slang, given that relocation might occur and mess the pointers... The idea to handle the algorithm in pure C is just so boring... (in which case, it would be simpler to handcraft a GMP plugin). Any advice?
