Hi, on IRC we discussed Morphic layouts tonight and I thought I'd post an example here. For many simple tasks ProportionalLayout works fine. In it, for each edge of a morph you specify a fraction of the container's extent as "anchor", plus an offset in pixels. The position of an edge is then simply determined by fraction * extent + offset So fraction=0 offset=10 means 10 pixels inwards from the left or top edge (as in the green and yellow morphs below), while fraction=1 offset=-10 means 10 pixels inward from the right or bottom edge (cyan and blue morphs). Fraction=0.5 is the center, and you can add an offset of course (right edge of magenta and left edge of cyan). Select this in a workspace, do-it, and resize the resulting morph. On the upcoming Leadership Election

Hello squeakers, A year has been passed and we are now going to elect a new Leadership team (many of us is still calling it Board ;). In the light of this event, i want to propose create a list of requests, issues and proposals which will be addressed to a newly elected team. Let us help them with understanding what is the most important issues we have, and to start not from own to-do list, but also consider YOUR thoughts. Please, feel free to add own IMPORTANT topic to the list, share your plans and vision about the future of Squeak. I do expect, that at all current team members will react on this and write down their thoughts. But it is open to anyone - PLEASE, do not hesitate to write own. I think as a member of Squeak community YOUR thoughts should be taken into account. Dear All, Andreas asked me to post some details of how people can contribute to 3.11, 4.0, 4.1+. What version are we doing again? ======================== I don't know about you but I am a bit confused about what the plans are for the next version of squeak. Essentially, the re-licensing effort has been deemed by the board to have version 4.0. With a new "clean" v4 sources file. This version of squeak will be essentially the same, feature-wise, as 3.10.2, it may have LPF, it may not. (LPF packages are licence clean) Following this 3.11 will be re-targeted to this 4.0 image and will probably be released as 4.1 soon after. How can I be involved in the re-licensing effort? ================================== Start by joining the folks on irc #squeak and read matthews emails. Matthew, Ken and others are thrashing out the details there. The deliverable of the re-licence effort will be a series of changesets, uploaded and discussed on mantis. So here is the clever thing: ***** Installer squeaksource project: 'Installer'; installQuietly: 'Installer-Core'. (Installer mantis bugsAll select: [ :bug | ((bug status = 'testing' or: [ bug status = 'resolved']) and: [ bug fixedIn = '4.0' ] ]) do: #ensureFix. ***** [ken - please could you add the 4.0 version to the available selection list] The code above will (soon) load the current set of published re-licensed code into your 3.10+ image, for you to test. How do I contribute code to the re-licensing effort? ==================================== 1) Pick/find something to work on in discussion with Matthew. 2) Post a mantis entry, describing your sub-task, soliciting discussion there. 3) Make that entry a child of http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=6989 so that the list of relicencing tasks is managed together. 4) When you have a changeset to deliver, upload it to the mantis entry. note: please use files in the following naming convention: M1234-SomeChangeSetName.1.cs having the bug number as a prefix is tidier. If you dont, dont worry, Installer will name changesets according to this convention anyway. 5) Add a script in a note, as in this example http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=6988 4) Set the status to "testing" and the fixed in field to "4.0" How do we test? ============ Using a 3.10.2 image, open a Transcript window and run the code snippet marked ***** above. If you are blessed, this will give you a result we shall call 4.0-test-alpha. [an alternative version of ***** is provided for you, in Installer] To update Installer. CPU of headless Squeak Image

All, I'm currently trying to track why a Squeak Image uses so much CPU resources constantly (>15%) on my linux box. I'm running a vanilla image (3.10.2-7179) using the 3.10-4 Unix VM: $ squeak -vm-sound-null -vm-display-null Squeak3.10.2-7179-basic.image This gives a constant CPU rate of >15% on my Celeron 2.4 Ghz root server (512 MB, CentOS 5). Any pointers? Is there maybe a preconfigured image somewhere I'm not aware of? CU, Udp

[Election] I am not running

Hey all! Some people have proposed that I should run for the leadership and I admit that it was tempting for a while, especially after exchanging some emails with Andreas. But after thinking it over I have decided to NOT do that. Those of you who have been in the community for a few years know that I have been quite involved in "those bits" especially during 2002-2007 approximately. Today I simply don't have the same time nor energy to go there again. The concerns and ideas Andreas just posted (our stagnation regarding contributions etc) is stuff that I also think we really need to address. I will try to put my energy into that and I really would like to revive DeltaStreams and evolve SqueakMap as possible pieces of the puzzle. And of course help out in the other work around all these things. regards, Göran

Neded help on menu item to save project on file

I need to add a menu item to the menu "Project" in the main docking bar wich will allow the user saving a project in other directory than Squeaklets or in other disk drive. This possibility already exists in the "World menu > old desktop menu > save project on file" in Squeak 3.9 and in Squeak 3.10 World Menu, but I don't know how to integrate this functionality in the main docking bar in novice mode. Someone can help me? I'm not a programmer, so a easy solution (.st file or else) would be a good help Thank you, Luis

Will Newspeak be callable by external programs?

Learning from Squeak's mistake, I am eager to know if Newspeak programs can be called by external programs. Can Newspeak programs be made into plugins or addons to non-Newspeak programs? Is it going to be able to control and be controlled by existing and future software? Is there any estimate of a release date?
