"Is it possible to use this stuff without loading the browser?" Probably somehow, but the integration with the UI that they've built, when you see it, makes you wonder why you'd want to. It's very nicely done. I guess it's possible, but with great travail that wouldn't be worth it, I don't think. Hi James, Thank you for pointing to the repository. This looks like it'll be great. I'm going to describe my findings in two parts. The first is a general view. The second addresses some of the problems, which I have not successfully addressed, on how to install Environments in Squeak due to its development on Pharo. Environments requires the OmniBrowser, Refactoring stuff, and Shout. These things all come in Pharo installed. Once you install Environments in Pharo from SqS, you get a new browser called Environment Browser in the World Menu. I don't know how to use it, as I spent time figuring how to install it. I image the video from ESUG will be of some assistance. Installing Environments poses some problems that I don't think I can solve myself. The following is a record of my efforts. Step One: (Installer ss project: 'rb') install: 'AST-Core'. This wil produce an error. I press Abandon and proceed. Step Two: (Installer ss project: 'rb') install: 'Refactoring-Core'. This will produce an error. I press Abandon and proceed. Step Three: Install the following without incident. (Installer ss project: 'shout') install: 'Shout'; install: 'ShoutWorkspace.1'. (Installer wiresong project: 'ob') install: 'OmniBrowser'; install: 'OB-Morphic'; install: 'OB-Standard'; install: 'OB-Shout'; install: 'OB-SUnitIntegration'. (Installer ss project: 'rb') install: 'AST-Semantic'; install: 'Refactoring-Core'; install: 'Refactoring-Spelling'. (Installer wiresong project: 'ob') install: 'OB-Refactory'; install: 'OB-Regex'. Step Four: You can now install Environments. The Environment Browser does not appear in any menu. And if you try to type anything in a new Workspace (as opposed to the one you used for install) you'll get an error: SmalltalkImage>>hasBindingsThatBeginsWith: At this point, because you can't use a Workspace, your image is severely impaired. I'd count about four bugs before this can be installed in Squeak. At this point maybe it's not a few bugs, but a port. Then there's the business of how to use the Environment Browser one hopes to see in a menu. Actually, I did play with it a bit in Pharo. If you press Command+click in the first pane, it'll ask you if you want a "new environment". Then it'll ask you for a name, and supply HappyPlace, as a default. Then it'll ask you if you want to associate the environment with a package. And for the moment, that's as far as I've got. Looks cool, James and Mariano. It looks like a great success from the GSOC. Advice on Mix and Match: squeak, cuis, magma, bobsui, maui

I've been working on some personal projects for which I'd like to use Magma and BobsUI. Maui might be an alternative or supplement to BobsUI. Additionally I want to make an autocompletion widget. I would appreciate any advice or insights into the best way to combine these elements. Broadly, the choices seem to be 1. Start with squeak 4.1 and attempt to modify the text editing system to match Cuis. magma, maui (?) and bobsui all work in 4.1. Work on autocompletion after merging in the Cuis changes. 2. Start with Cuis. Attempt to load the other elements, updating them as necessary for compatibility. 3. Start with squeak 4.1. Don't try to merge in Cuis, and build autocompletion within the existing text framework. For the autocompletion I'd much prefer to work with Cuis because of its simplified, pure-Morphic text widgets. Squeak and the auto-completers in it for code have a hybrid approach in which most of the actual work happens in the old MVC code. Even the latest released squeak, which incorporates some of the Cuis work (so that the interface classes are no longer subclasses of MVC), still uses mostly the old machinery (e.g., Sensors). I find the result overly complicated. There are reports of BobsUI loading into squeak 4.1 (4.0?), after adjusting for the text editor changes. There is a report of magma loading (not necessarily working) into Cuis. BTW, the autocompletion I'm interested in is more like google search (completion operates within a list of words or phrases) than the e/ocompletion packages designed to complete smalltalk code. Options 1, 2, and 3 above all seem to involve considerable work, of unknown size. The fact that the more recent Cuis work on text editing is not in mainline (AFAIK) suggests the merge is not trivial(*) (1 is hard). But Cuis doesn't support any advanced packaging scheme, and so loading things like magma and bobsui into it may also be a challenge (2 is hard). The difficulty of loading other packages into Cuis is two-fold. First, if package x is in a package of type y (e.g., Monticello), and Cuis doesn't have y, that could be a problem. Second, assuming one can get the code into the image, the differences between Cuis and regular squeak may require further code changes in the code of x itself. I know 3 (just use squeak and the existing text framework) is hard, since that was the original route I took. If anyone has any info, or even sense, of the work involved in the different alternatives, I would love to hear it. Thanks. That reminds me: for my SipStack I would need to touch this method (*), as would any other packages using other kinds of URLs. Perhaps we need a registry-based approach, so that we can safely load multiple URL-defining packages? I see no point in having SipUrl become part of Network, because most images won't use it.
