Actually, I think I've re-framed the question better. This is more about the specialObjectsArray. What does the virtual machine do with an object designated as the Display object in the SOA. To explore that, I'll look at senders of ObjectMemory>>specialObjectsArray. Thanks, Chris

[VM] [ENTERTAINMENT] A one-step VM build for hobby hackers

>From time to time, I try to update the instructions for building a unix interpreter VM. These tend to get out of date, so I decided to try doing it in the form of a script that can be run from a clean Squeak image to load, generate, configure, and build a VM. If you have a Unix/Linux system with development tools, you may want to try this yourself. Start in a clean directory, then run the attached VMUnixBuild.st script as follows: $ squeak myImage VMUnixBuild.st You can also evaluate the script piece-by-piece in a workspace to get a better feel for the process. Note that the steps that are done with OSProcess/CommandShell can be done in a normal unix terminal window, but I did it here with OSProcess so that the entire process can be done in a script. I don't know if this works on Mac OS X. If someone can give it a try, please let us know if it works. Dave

Printf class

Greetings, I downloaded the Printf package. I found it on Squeaksource and installed it with a file in. It is not on SqueakMap or Monticello. It is running, but doesn't seem to work. Missing a lot of documentation. Does anyone know how to use this? '12.343434' printf: '%3.2s' ==> '12.343434' Is there another print formatting class I should be using? Sincerely, Joe.

Celeste was always a cool example and it sounds like it wouldn't be much to get it going in 4.4. I hope someone will do it. Just now I bring Celeste, the Squeak email reader to new life in Squeak 4.3 You could test with MCHttpRepository location: 'http://www.squeaksource.com/Ladrillos' user: '' password: '' And load Network-Mail Reader-edc.26 Just test and works with yahoo, still do not with gmail, so I all ears. To my surprise, this once works in Squeak , in fact the missing is Squeak fileOut and fileIn in Pharo. Now you have weird things with the ServerDirectory and the FileList tool. Any have some clues ? Embedding into a child of a transform morph.

When one embeds a morph via direct manipulation into a descendent of a tranform morph, the embedded morph moves according to the transformation rather than stays in place. While I understand what's going on, this seems very counterintuitive. The morph can get moved outside of the Transform's clipping rectangle appearing to vanish. Should embedding invert the coordinates of the morph to embed first? I'm not saying this is easy, but the current behavior doesn't seem like "the right thing"(tm).
