http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=7732 says Sample startup demonstrating the problem: FileStream stdout nextPutAll: '! is an exclamation mark'; flush. which causes a SyntaxError whose content is: FileStream stdout nextPutAll: Unmatched string quote ->' ---- This is probably caused by something thinking the startup script is in chunk format? ---- The bug is spectacularly annoying because you simply (*) cannot run a script headless without first verifying that it works headfully. And come on, the ! is in a _string_. frank (*) The whole startup script process needs to be reworked, and that's well out of scope for this ticket or this thread, and we actually need some kind of headless UIManager, and that too is out of scope for now!

problem with Omnibrowser and Refactoring engine

I just loaded OmniBrowser with Refactoring engine from the menu Help-> Extending the system Everything seems o.k. for the loading and installing But when I tried to change the name of the Class (in the Class template of Omnibrowser) I had an error style "Undefined object >> mustBeBooleanIn: This error does not appear if we don't load Omnibrowser and Refactoring engine. This will be inefficient if there are many prefixMatches and patternMatches, because #difference will take O(n*m) time. I started measuring it and the highest number I got was 100ms, which is acceptable, but on a slower machine without Cog it can be a few seconds, which is rather slow. I have an optimized version, but it's not clear what the goal of this code is: > + pattern := (searchText beginsWith: '*') > + ifTrue: [searchText] > + ifFalse: ['*', searchText, '*']. If searchText is "*MC", then pattern will be "*MC", but if the searchText is "MC*", then it will be "*MC*". I think using #includes: instead of #beginsWith: matches with what the intention was. I'm not sure what you mean by this. The OpenGL code to compile and run shaders was used by this Procedural Textures project and by the Avatar animation part of Cobalt (and probably in OpenQwaq too?) As far as I am concerned, this should be part of the current OpenGL package. And FBO support too! Or are you talking about OpenGL/ES, which is what WebGL is based on? My impression is that this is a subset of the full OpenGL. Maybe Squeak support of OpenGL should be modeled on OpenGL/ES instead of the full OpenGL?? The only API I know of for WebGL is in Javascript, so maybe Amber would be an approach. (http://amber-lang.net/) Cheers, Dave

Metacello and Squeak4.4

I have a small 3 class package (Metacello-Base[1]) that I would hope could be included in the Squeak4.4 release. Of the 3 classes, the Metacello class is a stub class for the Metacello Scripting Api[2], that will bootstrap Metacello _if_ you use the scripting api. I am promoting the scripting api as the cross platform way to use Metacello. Instead of seeing install scripts fly by that look like this: Gofer new package: 'ConfigurationOfSeaside30'; squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; load. ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfSeaside30) version: #stable) load. (with the caveat that Installer should be used for Squeak)...the install scripts will look like this: Metacello new configuration: 'Seaside30'; version: #stable; squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; load. The same script will "do the right thing" on all three supported platforms (Squeak, Pharo, GemStone), presuming that the class Metacello is present in the base images:) I've recently released a preview version[4] and am actively collecting feedback. I would think that I can finalize the visible portion of the scripting api by September... I've been ensuring that the metacello preview release is functional on Squeak all along and I am currently running CI builds against Squeak4.3 using travis ci[5]. Moving forward I would add Squeak4.4 to the list of platforms for CI and publish updates to the Metacello-Base pacakge as needed. The class comments for each of the classes provides basic documentation for using Metacello so I think that Metacello-Base is a clean and small presence for Metacello and will enable the use of "cross-platform install scripts for Metacello."
