OSProcess test failures on CI

Hi Dave, A number of OSProcess tests fail on CI (http://build.squeak.org/job/ExternalPackages/287/#showFailuresLink). I'm installing them like this: Installer squeakmap update; addPackage: 'OSProcess (head)'; install. [(Smalltalk at: #AioEventHandler) aioPluginPresent] on: Warning do: [ "ignore the one-time warning dialog" ]. and I run the tests like this: HDTestReport runPackage: 'OSProcess-Tests'. which just runs the TestCases in that package using a custom runner. For instance, #testSpawnTenHeadlessChildren fails with "Block raised Warning: process accessor module not available". Could these be failing for the same reason the FFI tests fail? For instance FI.Tests.FFIPluginTests.testConstructedCharCall fails with "Unable to find function address". Any thoughts? frank

Stripping vs. Assembling

Your Stripping script, and any external ".st" script for that matter, should be a one-liner simply to call one single method, rather than having any sort of code with implementation details. One reason for this is so that browsing senders will miss as little as possible due to being externalized in an .st script. But another reason is because Stripping should be regarded *as valuable* a use-case as Assembling. There are two scenarios for deploying a minimal production image. The "conventional" way, used by other languages, is to develop the code base in a rich fat image and, when its ready, version it all up and Assemble it manually into a brand new SqueakTrunk image, sans all the richness. The other way, supported only by Smalltalk, is where I start with a ReleaseSqueakTrunk image (rich and fat) and develop my code and objects until I'm ready to deploy. Instead of being required to hand-assemble a new image I simply Strip the image I'm in and deploy that. (As I type this e-mail, the merits of Spoons approach continue to woo me. Craig?!)

Integrating custom SqueakTrunk images with trunk updates

Frank, this is so great. Everyone wants a smaller image for server processing but keeping "rich" images for clients and development. I love the methodical way you've come about to producing both, leaning on the systems own tests to ensure quality is maintained every step of the way. Kudos! > ... snip ... > Sure! Chris Cunningham posed an excellent question -- does anyone know whether we could take a SqueakTrunk (core) image, load selective packages into it but still keep up-to-date with trunk? >From what we've learned from Levente about the update-#; it's the sum total of all version numbers across all loaded packages and the trunk update uses that number to determine what updates are needed to move the image forward. With packages unloaded the trunk update process would seem to break down for that image, is that right? If we can't update a core/custom images, it creates a trade-off situation right off the bat. A smaller image, yes, but one that can only be manually patched. Is there any way to maintain the best of both worlds?

Package Hierarchy Map

One thing that might help us sort methods and organize methods into packages is try to decide what we think the responsibilities of those packages are. Here is a suggested hierarchy where the most-indented are the lowest level packages and the most outdented are the highest level packages. I might be helpful to be driven by where we think, *semantically*, the behaviors you're moving around belong rather than being driven by "any place but here because it creates a cycle". It probably won't be possible to eliminate the cycles between the three lowest-level packages, but hopefully from the ones above that. Morphic (and everything else) ST80 -- Not sure about this one, but seems like it should be "legacy" Smalltalk stuff rather than low-level stuff. Tools -- Domain models that describe and operate tool windows. System -- catch-all for System'y things. Does not include any tool-windows. Balloon -- Graphics framework. Graphics -- Things related to graphical output. Bit-blitting and canvas stuff. NOT Morphic stuff. Multilingual -- Things related to internationalization. Kernel -- Lowest-level things besides collections and error-handling. Collections -- collections. Exceptions -- Error-handling things. Thoughts?

First look in local class variables. Then look in local sharedPools (a local sharedPool will shadow a super class variable, that sounds fair). Then look in superclass pools. Note that this is mostly squeak 1.x implementation of #scopeHas:ifTrue: (or st-80), except that anEvironment parameter replaces Smalltalk. This way we avoid duplicate lookup of previous workaround. And we never ever look in superclass environment, that's not necessarily ours. This currently breaks some EnvironmentTest because inheriting superclass environment is a cheap and easy way to import all Smalltalk (unless you are not an Object or ProtoObject of course). If so, I'll happily start carving off other preferences. I'm pinging you just because (a) you know everything about Squeak and (b) System is at the heart of most of the package entanglements.
