Survey: what do you do with Squeak, what do you *want* to do?

Q-What do you use Squeak for? Genetic algorithms, scripting (a LOT), experimenting, Euler Project code, a chess engine, random data generator, cleaning up/transforming crappy data from databases and/or other sources, keeping up with new ideas in Smalltalk. Q-If you don't use Squeak, why not? Lack of a decent GUI builder. And unstability of the base code and/or difficulty to find code/frameworks/applications that load in-one-shot without me having to debug in the first place! Q-If you used Squeak in the past and don't now, what pulled you away? Lack of a decent GUI builder. Lack of a decent Windows support. Q-What does Squeak lack that you think might make you use it for 'regular' development? A decent GUI builder. And a central code repository that wouldn't make loading code a crazy adventure every time. If I want Python code, all I have to do is to visit PyPI. If I want Ruby code, all I have to do is to visit RubyGems. If I want R code, all I have to do is to visit CRAN R. If I want VisualWorks code, all I have to do is to visit Cincom Public Repository... Now, if I want Squeak code, I have to visit SqueakSource, SmalltalkHub, GitHub, SqueakSource3, SqueakMap and use a GitHub tool, or file in some code, or use the package manager, or use Monticello, or use the Package Universe browser, or Gofer, or the SqueakMap Catalog Browser, or... Well, you get the picture. Besides, once I've found what I was looking for, often times the code doesn't load because it was ported to Pharo... or it's never been updated to be compatible with the current Squeak version. Another tool Squeak needs is an image packager (à la VW or VAST or Dolphin) that works! NOT scripts! Q-What things are too hard or annoying to do? Building GUIs, again. Package an image to deploy. Keeping up with the base code. Who need traits, really? Who uses traits, really? It would have been more beneficial to invest that time/effort into cleaning up morphic, modularizing the code, create a GUI builder and an Image Stripper ! Hmmm? What about if you want to implement a separate hierarchy in a separate System Window, or multiple textures embedded in OpenGL objects? I’m not sure how Craig Latta’s done some of his Caffeine demos, but I doubt if all those Morphs in various independent Canvases are embedded in a single WorldMorph. A new Squeak release

Hi All, we're moving close to a new Squeak release. There are some issues to discuss before we decide exactly what and when to release. I have two issues that I would like people's opinions on. 1. the VM can be compiled with support for read-only objects, and indeed Pharo is already doing this. Were we to enable read-only object support we could introduce read-only bindings. I have this code ready to go, but the current Squeak VM does not include read-only object support. We could go ahead and release without read-only object support or enable read-only object support in the VM, push the new VMs out and enable read-only literals. It would then take a few days for everyone to test their code and fix issues with read-only literals. For example, code such as a := { 'one ' . 'two ' . 'three ' }. a do: [:e | e at: e size put: (Character value: 0)]. must be rewritten, e.g. as a := #('one ' 'two ' 'three ' ) collect: [:ea| ea copyReplaceAll: Character space asString with: Character null asString]. and the classic '' writeStream as '' copy writeStream i.e. literals are read-only but copies of literals are not. 2. the current VM, Monticello and the ClassBuilder has full support for ephemerons, which provide instance based finalization. For example, if a file that is the key of some ephemeron in a registration dictionary, then, with a suitable finalization process, the VM will arrange that the ephemeron gets sent finalize when the file is only referenced from ephemeris, and then the ephemeron can finalize the file itself, flushing any buffered characters and closing the file's descriptor. What we have now is a copy of the file in a weak registry, which means we finalize the copy not the actual file. This limits our ability to write clean file implementations. The same applies to several other uses of weak registries. Again Pharo is using the facility (and hence we can use their finalization process and some of their code). So the question is should we hold up the release for these features or should we go ahead and somehow arrange that we do address these (and other?) issues promptly in a subsequent release? Let me make a proposal. We go ahead and make a release with what we have, calling it Squeak 5.5, and then follow a plan to provide read-only object support, read-only literals, and as mush of the finalizationsystem rewritten to use ephemeron (where appropriate) as we can manage by, say, September 1. This will be Squeak 6. And the trunk process would update to requiring a rad-only-object enabled VM immediately after the 5.5 release. _,,,^..^,,,_ best, Eliot

Hello, My Travis builds fail and it looks like the trunk update is broken again: Preparing Squeak-trunk image for CI... .MessageNotUnderstood: SystemProgressMorph>>currentWorld > Time to run: 5.550s Build was unable to report intermediate build status. Same when I run smalltalkCI locally with Cygwin. The last things that I see in my local TravisCI.changes file are indeed Object removeSelector: #currentWorld, Object removeSelector: #currentHand, and Object removeSelector: #currentEvent.
