fascinating behavior when dealing with 574217 templates

Hi all, posting to squeak-dev cause I think it will intrigue you. I am importing 574217 Wikimedia templates into Squeak in an attempt to create a fast parser. I have developed two approaches. 1. dynamically create a class for each template. 2. add a template wrapped in an abject and store that in a Class Instance Variable Dictionary. (I am storing objects in a class variable) 1. I prefer as I like the idea and I am curious about how many classes we can load into Squeak. I tried to load all 574217 classes at once, but it took too long. (and I had no user feedback, hence my question on progress bars) Therefore, I broke the task into 5000 record batches. Interestingly, as I do this, it starts out VERY fast, but with each new batch the performance degrades very fast. Its like the more subclasses of a class I add, the harder it gets to add them. 2. I do not like the idea of storing objects in a Class Instance Variable. Why? Putting objects in a Class feels like a gravy stain on my best t-shirt. However, loading all 574217 objects finished within 1 5000 class load batch run. Why? I have no idea. Figured you all would find the phenomenon interesting. The generic questions of "How many classes can we hold in an image" and "How quickly can we create them" are interesting things in themselves. Squeak Classes are very much like a Database/SQL environment and easy to work with. Cheers. tty

[Discussion] Tools > "Metacello" and "Git Browser"

Hi, there. In the last board meeting, we agreed to finally do something about the current state of the install scripts and visible menu entries for both Metacello and the Git Browser. There have been several discussions on this list. The issues I see at the moment are: - Metacello has no graphical tool window but suggests that it has being in the Tools menu - Git Browser, if not installed, does not reveal "click to install) in the Tools Menu - a click on "Git Browser" will always update it (and Metacello?) before starting it, which is just unnecessary So, I am in favor of: - Removing "Metacello" entry from the Tools menu - Making the "Git Browser" install state more clear (via inbox Morphic-jr.1485) - On opening "Git Browser", avoid updating Metacello and Git Browser if they are already installed - Maybe, for manual (or administrative) updates, add "Installer ensureRecentMetacello" and "Installer installGitInfrastructure" back to the Do menu - revert #installGitInfrastructure to again do #ensureRecentMetacello I still like the MetacelloStub as it is now. :-) Best, Marcel

swiki source suited to recent Squeaks

I swear I've asked this before but a quick google didn't find anything, so forgive any duplication. Do we have a swiki package suited to recent (preferably current ) Squeak? The only trace I see evidence of is a very, very, old package in squeakmap, intended for 3.6 with KomService & KommHTTPServer. Pointer to progress meter example

Hi folks. I am importing 1/2 million Templates and dynamic Ally creating classes to wrap them. It's taking a long time and a progress meter would be helpful. Anybody know where an easy example is? I will add it to SeasideDoc as a how-to. Thx
