Fix for Monticello Configuration - Question about Inbox

Hi All, I Added a fix but not sure I did it correctly. Inbox has other non merged changes on it for Monticello Configurations. Realized after the save that the number it picked was a duplicate of other changes added to inbox. my change: " Name: MonticelloConfigurations-RJT.163 Author: RJT Time: 18 July 2020, 1:47:16.459316 pm UUID: 87d7467d-cc80-7c4a-95a8-2a02c20366e1 Ancestors: MonticelloConfigurations-mt.162 Fix the up and down button (to change the load order) of Monticello Configurations so that it automatically selects the package that is moved. This allows you to push the button more than once without having to select the package again. " What should I have done in this situation? Do we just pick a later version number. I'm assuming here that we do not merge in others changes to your own change set. Thanks for your help. Ron Teitelbaum

Squot and Github

Hi all, I have a project I've been working on using Squot and the new Git tools and pushing to a repository I have on Github. The repository is private but works with my username and password. I have been successfully pushing commits to it for a couple of weeks from the same image. This includes commits that I made yesterday. But today, suddenly, I am no longer able to push to my remote. Instead, I get the error in the attached image. Note that I have not changed any Github settings or anything like that. So I'm not sure what has changed or what's going on. Any ideas? Is anyone else having this issue? If I wish to find a way to "back out" of using Squot, is there some way to convert everything to Monticello (filetree) and just push it manually from my terminal? -- Eric

squeak.sh appears unable to allow specifying a project/file

We briefly touched on this at the last board meeting and I just got egg on my face trying to demonstrate how easy it was to run a Squeak commandline job. The immediate problem is that the squeak.sh script included in the current linux-x64 package does not let us run things in the form - ./squeak.sh my.image my.st because sometihng is making the VM see 'my.image my.st' as a single (bad) filename. With the shell debugging turned on it seems the last line of the script exec "${VM}" "${IMAGE}" is resulting in the eventual command being exec /home/tim/Squeak/{blah=blah}/bin/squeak 'my.image my.st' If I manually run that line without the quotes around the image & st filenames it runs properly. I imagine the must be some magic tweak to the script that would solve this? Any suggestions anyone? The equivalent script included in the development build VMs is completely different, doing interesting things related to GDB and LLDPATH and ... other stuff I don't understand. That also appears to wrap the image & st files in ' '. The equivalent script in the all-in-one is again different and does some working out of which VM to run per the platform but doesn't look like it would handle the st file any better. The matter discussed at the SOB was that none of them actually do anything akin to a 'proper unix install', which is in itself a can of parasitic brain worms I'd prefer to leave to other people. tl;dr - a) what magic would make the final command not have ' ' wrapped around the image & st filenames? b) can we try to make a less confusing system of scripts and have it/them do better? Installing metacello within a 'Smalltalk run:[]' fails

Running Installer ensureRecentMetacello works. (in a 5.3-19435 image) Wrapping it in Smalltalk run:[Installer ensureRecentMetacello ] crashes. Specifically in MetacelloScriptEngine>>#lookupProjectSpecFor: we find that 'registration' is nil on the last line. Seems a bit odd; possibly sometihng to do with the assorted exception handling in the SmalltalkImage>run: code? I'm trying to make a simplecommandline filein that will load a bunch'o'stuff, something that has been doable before, so this is a bit puzzling. {a bit later} Hmm, moving the Installer ensureRecentMetacello outside the run: block lets it install but later use of metacello within the run: block to load Seaside fails because MetacelloIgnorePackageLoaded signal: pkg doesn't return a boolean. squeak logging package(s)

I'm looking for some good message logging stuff - something a little more flexible that `Transcript show:` level - and so far the best I can see is a rather old package on squeaksource named 'Logging' originally by Keith Hodges but with quite a few updates by Mat Fulmer. I wonder if anyone is using it in a current image? It seems to rely on some process specific variable code that *looks* like has been incorporated into the trunk. Support an updated image format number for Sista

Hi Eliot, This is a belated follow up on earlier private discussion during a Squeak board meeting a few months ago, in which we agreed that identifying "Sista in use" in the image format number would be a useful thing to do. I previously added the documentation for this in ImageFormat-dtl.39.mcz (as well as the updated ckformat.c program to match). Attached here is a change set that can be loaded into a VMMaker image to add VM support for setting and reading the updated image format numbers. Here I used a primitive to initially set or clear the "sista bit". There are other ways this could be done, but this at least gets us started with a working implementation. By way of explanation, I am copying below both the change set preamble and the earlier ImageFormat commit notice: === Change Set: VMM-Sista-bit-dtl Date: 12 January 2020 Author: David T. Lewis Let the image inform the interpreter that alternate bytecodes either are or are not in use, and remember that setting when writing or reading the image format number in a shapshot file header. Provide primitiveMultipleBytecodesActive to allow the setting to be updated from the image. Expected usage is that the image can call this primitive after recompiling with Systa bytecodes, or after reverting back. Note that an alternative implemenation would be to use a VM parameter. The primitive was chosen here because it can perform parameter checking and does not require coordinated update the the VM parameter usage. Expected usage is that this feature will remain unused for some grace period (perhaps a few months) during which an updated VM can be widely circulated. After that period, images using Sista bytecodes may be safely saved with the updated image format number indicating that multiple bytecodes are in use. This change set includes helper methods in SmalltalkImage for testing or setting the multipleBytecodeSetsActive setting in the VM. Note the change set postscript which is necessary for initializing a class variable prior to code generation. === Name: ImageFormat-dtl.37 Author: dtl Time: 20 July 2019, 5:23:59.004 pm UUID: 52b464d5-0bf7-4326-bde3-4f18ad70b239 Ancestors: ImageFormat-dtl.36 Identify extended bytecodes for Sista in the image format number. Bit 10 identifies an image that contains extended bytecodes. Thus a 32 bit Spur image is 6521, with Sista it is 7033, and a 64 bit Spur image is 68021, with Sista it is 68533. It is expected that additional bytecode sets can be identified by an additional field in the image header, probably 32 bits containing two 16 bit fields, if both zero then Sista. Interested in Kafka?

Hi Everyone! I am writing this email to see if there are any folks out there who know Kafka. I had heard of a wrapper to the producer and consumer interfaces, but I lost this knowledge. Is there any work done in Squeak with Kafka? My idea that I would be recruiting for, if welcomed, would be to implement Kafka in Squeak. Start with defining the Log class and proceed. Is anyone interested? This is prime work in the area of big data, parallelized, fault-tolerant processing. Squeak can do this! Is there any interest in this? Kindly, rabbit
