UKSTUG Meeting - 29 November 2023 - Pierre Misse-Chanabier: Polyphemus

For the November UKSTUG meeting, Pierre Misse-Chanabier will talk to us about Polyphemus for the Pharo Virtual Machine ( https://github.com/hogoww/Polyphemus ). The presentation will focus on how to create Tooling on the Pharo Virtual Machine. (This does not require Virtual machine level knowledge) We will start by taking a look at a few existing tools. We will create one or two small tools, and see how they differ from tooling on the image side. Pierre Misse Chanabier is a recently graduated PhD with a focused interest on Virtual Machines, Code Generation, and Meta Programming. He worked on and contributed to many different levels and parts of the Pharo ecosystem. He is now working on how to leverage images for more than what they do now. He's currently working at Microdoc on the Graal VM ( https://www.microdoc.com/ ). Born in south of France, he currently lives in Lille. This will be an online meeting from home. [goodies] DebugLogInspector & Window Manager

Hi all, I just realized that I created two little goodies for Squeak last year but never shared them on the mailing list. Since today is as good a day as any for that, please welcome DebugLogInspector & Window Manager! DebugLogInspector [1] parses SqueakDebug.log files and allows you to inspect them in a normal debugger, including all object and stack variables and all available context frames. Citing a honorable fellow Squeaker, it "almost looks like a core dump". Just drag a SqueakDebug.log file into your image and select "inspect debug log". Window Manager [2] is a simple, you guessed it, window manager for Squeak. You can pin it to stay on top of other windows, find windows by some text from any of their panes, and locate them in your world using tooltips and halos. I have also set up a global command shortcut (Cmd + Shift + G) in my image to bring it up from anywhere. I found it quite useful when dealing with dozens and sometimes even hundreds of open windows or to bulk-delete them. :-) Both tools are written for Squeak Trunk but I could certainly migrate them to Squeak 6.0 upon request.
