Well, that was interesting :(
What I meant to say, rather then forwarding Aaron's mail back to the list, was something like this:
Aaron,
The screenshot looks kinda groovy; it reminds me of BeOS. I notice that it was taken on OS X - did you consider creating a dock equivalent? It works for both windows and morphs (just drag them to minimise) and should be able to leverage existing flaps stuff...

Each time I show someone OS X for the first time, they comment how cool the Magnification feature (an option) for the Dock looks. The auto expansion to fit items is pretty cool too. Apple has posted a QuickTime clip that shows the Dock in action if you have never seen it: http://www.apple.com/macosx/theater/dock.html
That would be cool to try. One of the things I love about how powerful and simple Squeak is - you can try experiments like this and have fun doing it.

there is such a thing! It was written for 2.8, a while back. It's called MorphDock. similar to the Mac OS X dock. i kind of doubt it works unchanged with Squeak 3.x, but i'm sure it could be hacked into place! Have a look at SqFixes for it.

Steve,
I saw one of those MorphDocks grazing out in the wilds and took a picture of it:
http://people.we.mediaone.net/trade/Zurgle/morphdockss.jpg
they seem like kind, gentle beasts.
[Something was wrong with my camera, it didn't record the cursor which was directly over the green method finder in the MorphDock when I took my snapshot.]
The one that I saw knew several tricks, such as the expansion behaviour that other Dock animals exhibit. Also, when I got close and passed a cursor over it, its name would pop up, just like in the picture! However, I didn't see any genii jumping in and out of bottles. [A pretty neat animation, if I wasn't so lazy I'd code it up] These "MorphDocks of the wild" use a different animation effect, entering and leaving is accomplished by the simplicity of a carry morph, with a little bit of shaking going on at the end by a shaking morph.
[BTW, Scott Wallace said I couldn't keep one. It would conflict with all the other flap animals on the farm. Besides, said he, other flaps on the farm can be configured to do almost the exact same thing with just a little coaxing]
One day a couple of weeks ago, I packed a snack and went over to my local CompUSA. Since they were in the middle of remodeling the store, the personnel pretty much left me alone. I played with the OS X Macs for about an hour. Having owned Macs in the past, I must say that the new environment and experience is, I'll say this politely, interesting. I'm glad I brought my snacks with me, it gave me something to do while waiting for even the simplest programs to load.
I saw one of those Dock animals that you were talking about. They seem like mean spirited beasts. Being raised in captivity like that must have brought out a nasty streak in them. Left to their druthers, they won't even leave the trash can alone!

Hi, Jim!
What I wrote (see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/squeak/message/14182) was only that the functionality being discussed for a MorphDock *could* be directly obtained from the existing system, using existing flap facilities, without having to write any new code.
I did not say any discouraging words about the MorphDock work -- I was only drawing attention to facilities already within the released image that appeared to handle the needs being discussed.
Cheers,
