Wouldn't it be nice if....this happened on startup. Perhaps there is a good reason why it isn't, but I don't know what it is. Otherwise, we could register a start up Class (Socket) and implement #startUp.

Best of all, IMHO, would be for the VM to do it internally as needed. For robustness, all VM network primitives already need a preamble anyway for checking whether the network has been initialized. All that would be required is modification of that preamble.
