Hello all,
Okay, so I've up-loaded a DRAFT of the proposed Squeak CD-ROM contents to CREATE for your review and comment -- please let me know what's missing in the way of packages, documents, and acknowledgments, etc. Most of the VM sources are not there, but they're easy to add.
You can peruse the CD-ROM using ftp at ftp://ftp.create.ucsb.edu/pub/Squeak/CD-ROM/
or via the Web at http://www.create.ucsb.edu/~stp/CD-ROM/ (Note that the Web interface won't follow the links to the subdirectories properly, but you can look over the html index pages).
To down-load the whole thing (240 MB zip file), just grab the file ftp://ftp.create.ucsb.edu/pub/Squeak/CD-ROM.zip
Specific questions:
1) Who has more screen shots for the gallery? See http://www.create.ucsb.edu/~stp/CD-ROM/Screen%20Shots/index.html
2) Who wants to try out the "Newbie -- out-of-box experience" image and tutorial (the tutorial still has some VisualWorks-specific stuff in it that I'm working over)? Up-load the image from ftp://ftp.create.ucsb.edu/pub/Squeak/CD-ROM/Demos/Getting%20Started/
3) What packages, documents, etc. am I missing? See ftp://ftp.create.ucsb.edu/pub/Squeak/CD-ROM/Packages/ and http://rain.create.ucsb.edu/~stp/CD-ROM/Packages/index.html
4) Whom have I forgotten to acknowledge or cite?
5) If you want to complain about the look of the web pages, please send me a better design. I'm the audio guy, remember (i.e., no visual sense).
6) How can we make this more useful to readers of the book, and the community in general?
Enjoy!
Wow, it's like christmas all over again, lots of stuff here I never seen before :-)

I think you should include the 2.9alpha as well. Lots of stuff has happened eg. the superSwiki and projects.
Karl
Wonderful, wonderful! What an incredible service to the community Most wonderful is the Swiki snapshot for offline browsing - will a more recent snapshot become available or is it a hellish amount of link-repairing?
Here are some of things I would add, assuming permission can be obtained and there is no second version of the CDROM:
Tutorials - 1) David Smith did a great presentation on metaclasses/metaobjects - the handouts are not completely self-explanatory but enough to clear up some of the biggest confusions. 2) I also love Craig Latta's Object Metaphysics drawing - follow the lines and you'll achieve enlightenment.
Documents (probably can't due to copyright restrictions) - 2a) The stuff Dwight has on his web site (the "lost" Blue Book chapters, etc.)
Goodies - 3) Golgi is a worthy attempt at realizing Vannevar Bush's Meme machine
Archives for pack rats (they're on the internet, but may someday disappear) - 4) Of course interpreter sources for non-Mac machines 5) The last Mac interpreter that can be built with MPW 6) All the old images going back to 1.1 (and available VMs) 7) All the official SC change sets 8) The UIUC Smalltalk archives other than the Squeak directories

Is it possible to create a Squeak server application for use with these client browser plugin squeaks?
Once again, droooool.
Thanks in advance! Ali.

These are 2.8 plugins, which is the latest stable release. You can expect 3.0 plugins in a couple of weeks.

I don't know - but I don't think so.

Of course.

Stephen,
The family video camera went kablooiee this week and I wanted to ask you a few questions to cement what you said at lunch in Chicago. I want to get, I suppose, a -digital- camera. My goal is to be able to create (someday) video cds, which you called dvd-ram. So what options should I look for in a camera? Firewire? USB? S-VHS? Any faqs you can point me to would be great.
It was good to finally put a face together with a name I'd seen for so long. Thanks.
Well, it looks like I didn't pay enough attention when I hit the reply button. My apologies.
