Hi guys!
I don't want to NAG, but have anybody at least looked at SqueakMap running in part on: http://marvin.bluefish.se:8000/sm
Do note that SqueakMap is NOT only for the new modules system - far from it in fact. Let me reiterate in short:
- A master server will run SqueakMap on squeakfoundation.org (or similar) - It will have the webUI you can see above (but prettier and with more functions) - You will be able to search (using Scott's engine), browse (similar to Yahoo or GNOME software map), register and update Squeak packages and Module repositories. - A Squeak package is simply a piece of published Squeak software. It does not need to be packaged as a 3.3alpha Module. - A module repository is more or less a "mount point" in the global virtual module namespace that the new modules system introduces. - You will also be able to run your own "local" slave map in your image and synchronize it really efficiently using simple HTTP/gzip (straight through firewalls and a modem will do) with the master. - The slave map (and the master) keeps it's state in one simple logfile using chunkformat. Simple, efficient and since the map opens/closes on each operation it is always written to disk. - You will have a nice MVC/Morphic browser to do all these functions inside Squeak. - You will be able to install any module (as in the new modules system) in the world by just knowing it's module path since the slave map will be able to figure out which repository the module resides in.
Well, it will not bring World Peace but it sure will be an important piece of the Squeak community so PLEASE... Take a look, read the help pages and give me some FEEDBACK.

I like the idea. The implementation looks fine (nitpick alert - you 'administer' a system, not 'administrate' it) so far as I can examine it right now.
It would be nice if it were possible to have squeakmap take the file and upload it somewhere. One of the perennial problems with the web is sites moving; we can at least hope that some site like 'squeakfoundation' will stay around whatever happens to the actual idea ofa squeak foundation.
It might be nice to try to integrate this with the sqfixes page, to get everything in one place.
It would be nice to be able to include the elements of the update stream as some variety of package.
Good stuff. Now where's that CVS doc you were going to produce so that dummies like me can actually have some hope of sticking to whatever regime we agreed upon for the vmmaker archive? Waddya mean you need to sleep sometimes?

What sort of documentation do you need, Tim? I could probably compose a guide for the basic commands and their usage for you.

Tim is referring to a HOWTO based on a lengthy mail thread a while ago where we agreed to a bunch of guidelines/rules etc for branching, tagging, merging between branches and releasing.
I have all the relevant parts of that discussion cut/pasted together and I started a HOWTO on Minnow but only got started.
I will get back to it tomorrow and at least post the base material to begin with so that people can help me dissect it into a nice howto.

Ok, I will fix that! :-)

Sure, we can add such a facility. The important thing though is that noone is forced to store their code in ONE single place. SqueakMap is a catalog - not a repository.

Yep.

Agree. It is on my drawing board.

Mmmm. Yes... interesting.

Ehrm... Yes, I know. It is on my list TRULY. Together with fixing Sqcvs. I am working full time Squeak this week so I think I should manage to squeeze some of that in.
But now it's 2:27 here so sleep sounds rather tempting... :-)

Göran;
I visited within minutes of your first invitation ("SqueakMap first appearance!") and apologize for not posting anything at the time. The concept is exciting and I look forward to its continued development.

I also checked it out right away. Looks cool. I expect to be listing STOMP on there soon.

The idea looks cool to me.
I assume that if it is successful, it could replace the AllProjects page on the Swiki, among other things. (Assuming as Tim mentioned that it could be moved to an official-looking 'squeakfoundation' site of some sort.) The AllProjects page is better than nothing, but this would be a lot better.
