hi, I just uploaded a screenshot showing SqueakNOS scanning the pci bus. click on the images in the swikit: http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/1762
My next thing on the list is to implement vmware's ethernet card, I have three options (as you can see from the screenshot):
AMD Am79C790, PCnet Lance PCI Ethernet Controller Intel 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller VMWare Inc. VMXNET PCI Ethernet Adapter
I'm going to work on the first (AMD), mainly because I think it's the most common of the three to exist outside vmware, and also, and probably more important, because GRUB has support for it, and I can get the minimum information to make it work out of GRUB's sources :-)
any ideas, as usual, are welcome. gere
PS: I'd love to know if anybody managed to recompile SqueakNOS, or to rebuild or reboot with a custom .image. Or if anybody is working on something, or anything else related
Hi gera--
I'd love to know if anybody managed to recompile SqueakNOS, or to rebuild or reboot with a custom .image.
I've done both (and it boots :).
Or if anybody is working on something, or anything else related
I'm integrating it with Spoon[1].
thanks again!

Gerardo,
You rock, you totally totally rock!!!! I have been trying to figure out how to get it to do that as it's the most critical "next step" but now I am dying to see how you did it. I think your right about the AMD NIC device driver, it seems to be the default.
I have managed to recompile it (x86 CPU, vmware professional vm etc.) a couple of times and the compile works fine although haven't tried a custom image (yet).
Regards,
Johnathon

Most of the code is available in Monticello from SqueakSource: http://squeaksource.com/@RzdHQsJLlRuqvWcY/ywrqbocp
However I'll be doing a release anytime soon... I want to see how complicated the networking is. If it's not too complicated I'll wait until it's ready, otherwise I'll release what I have sooner.

PS: Thanks for the feedback!
Hi Gera,
I downloaded the updated mcz earlier today and created a couple of ISO's but haven't yet got the new PCIDevice method allValid to work in the same way your screen capture shows with an ordered collection but will keep trying.
I also tried to load SqueakNOS-gera.7.mcz into one of my croquet images but it can't complaining about a syntax error but will look into that more in the weekend.

If you got the list of devices, but the print string is not correct, you probably need to initialize the dictionary with all the strings (do "PCIDevice initialize"), and then try PCIDevice allValid Ctrl-I (explore it) again.

uhm... keep me informed. I was thiking on trying to start again from scratch with a clean image, to see how it behaves, but I never did it.
