[ENH] addHorzScrollbar

from preamble: "Change Set: scrollport Date: 28 December 2002 Author: Steven Swerling I was adding a horizontal scrollbar to the SimpleHierarchicalListMorph, but realized that many of the methods would be generic to any subclass of ScrollPane. And there were many methods. So I moved the changes up to ScrollPane. This changeset adds a horizontal scrollbar to ScrollPane, which appears as needed. I don't know if there is any demand for this, so I'm just running it up the flagpole. WARNING: The last thing you need is for a bug in ScrollPane. I don't know of any in this code, but better safe then sorry. So consider this a beta. Please tinker around with your applications to make sure everything is working ok before saving your image. Tested on a fresh 3.4 image w/ updates up to #5138. "!

Pocket PC Performance

Hey all and Happy Holidays! I finally bit the bullet and bought a Pocket PC for the express purpose of doing Squeak work on it. I'm sure that I'll get a chance to play my part in creating cool stuff for the Squeak PDA community. ;-) I am pleased to announce that Squeak does run on the Audiovox Maestro, which is a rebranded Toshiba e570 with 32MB of RAM. I bought it for its CF2 (IBM Microdrive compatible!) and SD slots! Cool! I am using the TinySqueak image. I am disappointed in the very sluggish performance I get from Squeak on my 206MHz StrongARM computer. The last time Smalltalk felt so slow for me was when I ran Smalltalk/V v2.0 on a 7.88MHz Tandy 1000SX back in 1988. Why is it so slow, and is there anything I can do about this? Settings perhaps? Is MVC more usable? TinySqueak doesn't have MVC. I ran the following two benchmarks: Time millisecondsToRun: [ 1 to: 10000 do: [ :i | i printString ] ] This gave me slightly more than 12000 milliseconds. :-( Time millisecondsToRun: [ 1 to: 1000000 do: [ :i | ] ] This gave me slightly more than 900 milliseconds. So object allocation and garbage collection are the culprits? Thanks for any pointers (not that kind of pointers)! -Carl

Duplicate Connector Flaps & Menu Items

Hi, In a 3.4beta image, when I upgraded Connectors from 1.2c to 1.8 (via the SqueakMap browser), I got duplicate flaps ('Class Diagrams', 'Connectors', and 'FSM') and flap menu items, which I chased as far as the SharedFlapTabs class variable of Flaps and the postscript of the Connectors1 ChangeSet. I fixed the flaps with the menu and the menu by inspecting SharedFlapTabs and removing the older 3 entries. Does anyone else see this? Is there a better solution? Thanks, Steve

Squeak without mouse?

They are user interface conveniences, But they are so AMAZINGLY convenient. Let me put it this way: if you are writing new code, you don't need this stuff, but if you are trying to find your way through someone else's existing code, they are life-savers. Method categories in particular provide important 'meta-information' about what a method is _for_, and provide a way to locate methods when you have not the slightest idea of what their name might be, but do know what they're for. I'm in the process of writing some Smalltalk code (4700 SLOC so far and rising steadily) that has nothing to do with Squeak, and even though I know what every line is, and there are only about 70+ classes so far, I find myself wishing for class categories and message categories. One could also argue that if your class has so many methods that you need method categories, that you should think about refactoring it into more than one class anyway. To my way of thinking, this completely misses the point of method categories. They are NOT a way of chopping up a huge lot of methods into managable groups, they are a way of providing important information to other people so that when they are interested in what conversions to other types are on offer, they go go straight there without having to look at anything else. Even if there is only one other method, NOT having to read it to figure out that it isn't relevant is a win. What I often find myself wanting is a 'flattened' view showing all the inherited-and-not-overridden methods as well, NOT as a great long list such as 'protocol' gives me, but as a two-pane browser with method categories. If I want to know what enumeration methods are available for some class, I *don't* want to have to wade through everything inherited from Object to get there, I just want to look at the enumeration methods. Eiffel has something similar to the class categories idea, in that Eiffel methods can have a lot of semi-structured "indexing" information added at the top. There's a defined syntax for placing that information and Eiffel tools know about it, so you can find classes related to a particular topic. What Eiffel _doesn't_ have is method indexing. Class/method categories are perhaps a simplistic kind of indexing, but they are better than *NO* indexing.

What about having tutorials accesible through SM ? Maybe categorized by languages.
