[Newbie] Project design problem

Please, any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. I thought that as my first "major" Squeak project, I'd translate a game that I had written in Ruby...but the concept seems wrong. In the original game a tile (gtk: label) with a series of letters would display at the top of the screen, and below it there would be four pictures (xpm, gif, whatever was convenient) on "buttons". Clicking the button that matched the tile would advance to a new scenario with a different label and different pictures. (In this particular game it was music note names and images of the note on either a bass or a treble staff.) In the original, the images were left on the disk, and only read in as needed (to conserve memory). In Squeak...well, in the first place I can't figure out how to read a note and place it on a button (which is only then "opened in the world"). Squeak appears to want the images to be read in ahead of time, one by one, and placed by hand, but I suspect that this is my inexperience. Also, when the image is read in, it seems to be assigned an arbitrary ID (reasonable), but what I would want to do is to store them in an ordered collection, and access them by ???? name? index? octave? If I could read in an image and place it into a button, then I could do a straight translation. But would this be the proper approach? I thought I might find the proper approach by studying the code for the FreeCell game, as in many ways it appears to be a similar problem, but the approach they take appears to be drawing the images on the fly, and the thought of trying to program the drawing of bass and treble signs fills me with such trepidation that I feel this MUST be the wrong approach.

Squeak Merchandising ;)

Hi all The squeak foundation is moving... We obtained the right from tim to use the logo to do some merchandising. As we cannot have twice the same item with different logoes I created two shops http://www.cafepress.com/SqFoundation http://www.cafepress.com/SqueakShop We are testing them. So refrain to buy now :) All the benefits will go to the squeakfoundation and everything will be transparent. We should receive some items soon to really test their size. We plan to have Tshirt and Mugs and to use the balloon of bert who gave us also the right to use it. Let us know if you have some preferences for the items. Stef

About Services-Base

hi romain I got a look at Services-base since I wanted to include it in 3.9a following our map. - why do you have the menu bar in base? BlockContext>>browseDefiningMethod "shows a method pane allowing to edit the method defining a block" | who m | who := self home who. m := MethodHolder isolatedCodePaneForClass: who first selector: who second. m useSquareCorners. m openInWorld why do not put that in systemNavigator why do you force squareCorners especially since the style use rounded one this will be a visual bug. Could you put translated for the string messages? Can we avoid the overrides? since services are a basic infrastructure. Else the code looks good. Getting the popup for the initialize is annoying. Can you fix that? Stef

(newbie) Thoughts around world window.

Hi! I'm new to squeak and have been going through Morph to get a hang of it. But somthing I can not figure out is: The main world window. How do I get hold of the instance or is it a global variable? Second of all is it possible to use the morph features like: layoutPolicy:, TableLayout, PropotionalLayout aso.? What I'm realy after is when I start to drag the corners of world window I want the morphs inside to adjust in size( ProportionalLayout). Many thanks in advance for help! Marcus

Method Finder

Sometimes Method Finder will display a selector that is neither implemented nor sent. Where is it finding these selectors? Can I infer anything interesting from their existence in the list? For example, in my current image when I enter and accept "override", one of the many selectors listed is "traitOverrideTextColor". This item shows no implementors or senders.

I notice that some of the recent discussions have touched on key-mapping and the mouse user interface. I stumbled across problems with the ClickStateHandler code a while back and have been slowly gaining knowledge (or confusion) about this ever since. I have even tried a substantial rewrite/bug fix which I've added to http://bugs.impara.de/view.php?id=1347. There's too much detail to put into an email but to summarize. The double click handling specs have been changing more or less constantly. Including myself. There are at least a half-dozen programmers who have taken a whack at it. The guts of the logic have been changed more than that many times. One of the pieces needed is the user story of what double click, click, drag and timeout should be doing. How they should relate to each other and the processing of mouse up,down and move; Mouse enter and leave. How should all of this affect mouse focus. Squeak will be more powerful with this resolved. As a fan of Lewis Carroll it was not hard to spot the references to his works in squeak culture. So when I saw the title: What the Dormouse Said: The Untold Story of How the Sixties Counterculture Shaped the Personal Computer Industry by John Markoff I figured it was worth browsing. I was not disappointed. Not only does it give Alan Kay a prominent mention it illumiated for me a lot of the impulses that lead to the creation of smalltalk and squeak. Besides, it was well told.
