TypeCollector class >> newForPlatform is making reference to a deprecated method (Smalltalk version). Below is the fix. Semantics of Set>>new in Squeak 3.9 -- To initialize or not to initialize?

Hi all, I am looking at the "new" class method in Squeak 3.9 (and maybe prior to that). It appears that most classes implement "new" as: ^ self basicNew initialize which is implemented in Behavior. But the "Set" class re-implements "new" and does not invoke initialize. Is this behavior intended? I had a few classes that derive from Dictionary and used to work without calling initialize. Now I must explicitly invoke the constructor. Is this lack of congruency the desired behavior? John -- It's easy to have a complicated idea. It's very very hard to have a simple idea. -- Carver Mead

traceroute in squeak

I am trying to implement a graphical Trace Route app in Squeak for a class project. I am wondering if there is a way for me to use the DOS tracert application. 1. Essentially I want to somehow run the tracert DOS command and read the output of the command into squeak as text? 2. Is there an equivalent of the "system()" C/C++ function in squeak/smalltalk? -- Viral

[ANN] Chalten - A Point based model of the Gregorian Calendar

Hi, we uploaded to SqueakSource a new project called "Chalten" that is the Squeak implementation of the Gregorian Calendar we presented last year at ESUG. This model reifyes many concepts of the Gregorian Calendar that Smalltalk-80 does not (like day or day of month, etc). This model was born one year and a half ago but we just be able to open it. The main objective of this model is to easily solve problems of the Gregorian Calendar that are not so easy to do with the Smalltalk-80 classes. It provides also some concepts that are useful for financial applications like TimeLineFilter and RelativeGregorianDate. This model also uses the units models (Aconcagua) we uploaded last week. Because it uses the units model, there are some concepts that are not useful anymore, like Duration, because a Duration is a Measure of time. Anyway, you can read about the model at the SqueakSource wiki (we wrote a faq with some examples), the ESUG presentation from http://prog2.vub.ac.be/~cderoove/esugtalks/Wilkinson.pdf <http://prog2.vub.ac.be/%7Ecderoove/esugtalks/Wilkinson.pdf> and the paper from http://www.iam.unibe.ch/publikationen/techreports/2005/iam-05-001/file/at_d… It comes with almost 600 tests and you can read in the paper how it compares to Chronology. installing nCompiler in 3.9 leads to Environment>>bindingOf: dependency conflict

Sorry with this endless "absolutely beginner" questions, but this maybe can help someone else like me, and you can save me some time by helping me: Finally, I've launched the SqueakMap Package Loader succesfully under 3.9a7021 (thanks to Goran) I wanted to install the nCompiler package, but I'm getting this error message: --------------- This package depends on the following classes: Environment You must resolve these dependencies before you will be able to load these definitions: Environment>>bindingOf: --------------- Ok, as the message error has no useful meaning for me, an unfamiliar Squeak developer, I have to translate "resolve dependencies" as "install another package which contains this class" and go with that: (and asking myself again: what's the real difference in writing a more descriptive error message if it consist of just adding 5 or 6 words anyway? ...mmm maybe the "advantages" of polymorphic hierarchies applied to reuse error messages?) Well, no Environment class in 3.9a7021, it's ok 'cause I've started my 3.8image and searched which package belongs to "Environment". ...(BTW, the PackageBrowser has no tooltip or label in any pane, is the package name only the leftmost pane? ), and the winner is the package "System-Support". Get back to 3,9a7021 and no "System-Support" package listed in SqueakMap (yes, I've updated the SM fine when it started)...my final question is where is the class? should I install by hand: fileOut from 3.8 and fileIn in 3.9? As you see, so many questions. Hope anyone can help me. Cheers Bill

Where to publish minor clean-up ?

A lot of methods seem duplicated like for example: DecompilerConstructor>>codeTemp: index named: tempName ^ TempVariableNode new name: tempName index: index type: LdTempType scope: 0 DecompilerConstructor>>codeTemp: index ^ TempVariableNode new name: 't' , (index + 1) printString index: index type: LdTempType scope: 0 The second one should better be ^ self codeTemp: index named: 't' , (index + 1) printString This is a very minor clean-up, i agree, but plenty of these can make code smaller smarter easier to maintain... So my question is where to publish such small pieces of code ? Nicolas

BookMorph prompt

BookMorph still has a hardcoded link to a server called 'DaniOnJumbo' which does not work. (This occurs in Squeak and in EToys). I did hear someone say that preference is to use projects (from Navigator tab) in place of BookMorph - is this correct? Even if projects are preferred, given that BookMorph appears as a primary item in the Supplies, it really should work properly. I suggest a fix to provide a default local file and/or prompt the user.

[BUG] 0003400: Load Latest Code Updates Gives Walkback

Hi all, I logged a bug in Mantis about loading latest code updates. I have an image built upon a fresh 7020 3.9 image and I cannot seem to "load code updates" to get the 3071 patch. Details are at http://bugs.impara.de/view.php?id=3400. It might just be me or my image, but I'm not sure why I get the walkback about SMBase-gk.63 not found.
