[ANN] Discovery 0.1 - a Bonjour-like service finder in pure Squeak

Hi, I've implemented a Bonjour(Rendezvous)-like thing in Squeak. You can publish network services in a few steps, and clients will know the services automatically. http://map.squeak.org/account/package/6a54b2cc-ea9b-4622-a0cb-fd7222c22892 Features: - Uses simple tab and CR separated text format to describe services. - Uses lightweight UDP multicast/broadcast protocol. - Supports publish, search, and notification of services. - Provides adapter for publishing existing KomServices. Examples: "Publishing (in server)" pub := DsPublisher defaultForMulticast registerServiceNamed: 'SuperSwikiService1' host: 'someServer' port: 8080 maxAge: 5. pub start. "Searching - actively search services (in client)" DsSearcher default searchAll. The framework can be used for dynamic discoveries of some cool services (Magma, NetMorph, etc). Ubuntu's startsqueak script

Hello all, in the past days, Jordan Mantha's has worked to improve the Squeak packages in Ubuntu Linux. He also has added a new startsqueak script which acts as an installer, similar to the older inisqueak script, and also as a launcher. I tried it on my Fedora Core 5 and it works correctly there, too. Since the script can be useful to all the Linux users here, I'm attaching it to this message. The script requires zenity, an utility provided by the GNOME desktop environment. Giovanni

[ANN] SUnitExtensions

Hi, we created a project in SqueakSource called SUnitExtensions with extensions we added to SUnit. This package is needed to run the test of Aconcagua (see next mail!) The extensions are: * TestCase>>should: aBlock raise: anException withExceptionDo: anotherBlock * TestCase>>should: aBlock notTakeMoreThanMilliseconds: anInteger * TestCase>>fail This are very useful methods... it would be nice to have them in the SUnit package... Re: Fraction equality and Float infinity problem

Well, the problem is not only for infinity (Overflow). It is also true for underflow. (2/(11 raisedTo: 400)) = 0.0. "is true" (2/(11 raisedTo: 400)) = 0. "is false" And in fact, the equality transitivity problem can show up for any fraction not exactly representable in IEEE Floating point, that is most Fractions. Since Fraction set is dense in set of real numbers, i can find an infinite number of Fractions lying between two Float. Since IEEE floating point arithmetic only have a finite number of possible values, then for each floating point value, there exist an infinite number of fractions that will be equal to this float (in current implementation, not mathematically), but the fraction will not equal to each other, thanks to exact arithmetic. Example: | a b | a := (16rFFFFFFFFFFFFF11 / 16r1000000000000000). b := (16rFFFFFFFFFFFFF10 / 16r1000000000000000). c := a asFloat. {a = b. a = c. b = c.}. "is {false . true . true}" Knowing this, i'am not sure that ((1/3) asFloat = (1/3)) should answer true. Maybe that should be only the case for exact representation like 1/2 1/4 3/4 etc... But in this case, we also have to redefine coercion to coercing to Fraction instead of Float, because Fraction are more general (yes, Float is a subset of Fraction). If we do not coerce to exact arithmetic, we will have ((1/3) asFloat - (1/3)) isZero, and still we might be caught by some form of equality problem... Thus are we ready to exchange our fast floating point algorithm for slower Fraction, with a huge number of useless digits, each time somebody introduce a Fraction. Are we really sure we vote for this perfect system ? I am not sure at all. And that is also the case between floating points and integers. Sure other dialects also have the equality problem, maybe not for Infinity, but for less trivial inexact arithmetic case. All is coming from problem of these languages calling floating point numbers real. Real is more general than fraction, ah yes, we have been foolished by this one. What should we do ? Passing strings to a plugin

Hi I have a plugin as follows: run: hostApi inDev: inDeviceName outDev: outDeviceName rate: sampleRate frames: frames latency: latency self export: true. self primitive: 'run' parameters:#(String String String SmallInteger SmallInteger SmallInteger). (self cCode: 'sdrOpenMainStream(hostApi, inDeviceName, outDeviceName, sampleRate, frames, latency)' inSmalltalk: [false]) ifFalse: [^ interpreterProxy primitiveFail]. When I look at the parameters on the C side the strings are sometimes correct (depending on their length and content) and sometimes have rubbish after them like the terminator is missing. The integers are always ok. Do I have to explicitly terminate the strings? Thanks for any help. [ANN] Self-bootstrapping environment for Squeak 3.9a

Hi all, I've created the first tolerably usable version of self-bootstrapping environment for Squeak 3.9a that can produce kernel image. It's delivered from http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2005-October/096029.… but it's prepared completely from scratch. You can find it here: http://www.comtalk.net/Squeak/uploads/20/kernel.tar.bz2 You need the fresh image 3.9a-6719. Then evaluate Smalltalk condenseChanges This step is necessary because of limitation of maximal changes file size. Condensing of changes files doesn't work well because it corrupts the methods that contains WideStrings. So you have to load file UTF8Patch.1.cs. This image detaches GUI and model of changes so it contains new class named ChangesOrganizer. It has to be loaded before bootstrapping and it's included in ChangesOrganizer.st. Then load Bootstrap.st. This file contains bootstrapping tools. The source codes of bootstrapped image are included in Mirrors.cs. The loading of this file will take a while. For opening of the console evaluate "Bootstrap start". In the console evaluate command "Bootstrap revert". This commnad will merge mirrors of classes, then it removes unnecessary classes including mirrors and recompiles whole image. The result can be saved using "Smalltalk snapshot: true andQuit: false" This image is not absolutely clean. It contains some obsolete classes (I've got one clean image without obsolete classes, it will no problem to fix it). Have lot of fun -- Pavel Some modifications: If you look at mirror of UIManager, you will see some new messages like onEventSensorStartup. The sender of this message is mirror of EventSensor>>startUp. In the original method is line Smalltalk isMorphic ifTrue:[self flushAllButDandDEvents]. so we need only write the content of the block to the MorphicUIManager -- and so on... This is one set of modifications. There is one correction of current sources -- class AsyncFile used class variable named Error and this name collided with another class name. Some methods contain comment " shrinked ". This is removed functionality and we need to discuss next destiny of such stuff. For example the SecurityManager is dependent on cryptography classes. It's possible to remove it completely but it plays important role during Squeak startup. But without cryptography this class is not complete, so it's good candidate for next refactoring. The last set of interventions are little modifications of souces like in XxxMultiCharacterScanner>>scanMultiCharactersFrom:to:in:rightX:stopConditions:kern:. This method uses class TTCFontSet that is removed. We need to suppose that competent package (with true-type font support) will modify this method or refactor it to enable more elegant way how to solve this. Another example is sLanguageEnvironment class>>startUp etc. I try to have the set of such modifications as small as possible. AutoStart is currently removed from startUpList...

Strange Noise

Hi, After quite some time I've started squeaking again. My Toshiba 2450 Laptop makes a constant noise whenever I have a 3.9 image open. It only goes away when I am resizing the windows. I am running a 3.9a-7004 image on Windows XP using the VM marked as 3.7.1 release from Sep 23 2004. The problem does not happen in a 3.9a-6678 image or any of the previous ones. It seems to be related to the introduction of the new handlers (those ones used to resize the windows inside Squeak). Can somebody point me out to the version where these new handlers were introduced? Thanks, Francisco
