Also, I occasionally browse through the used equipment on eBay looking for good tablet values. It might be reasonable to get a few older ~500mhz tablet PCs and again swap out the hard drives for some big flash drives. Maybe something similar to http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/3366 although you would have to verify that they would actually boot from the flash drive.

The PR Team

Hi All, I'm happy to announce that the Squeak board has approved the creation of a public relations team. The aim of the PR Team is twofold: craft the message of the Squeak community with the participation of the Squeak community; and, develop a list of tools and relationships for the dissemination of that message. The release of a new virtual machine and a change in the license are topics that come to mind for announcements. Anybody and everybody is encouraged to join the PR Team or to contribute comments and ideas pertaining to the PR Team. The members at present are myself, Brad Fuller, and Will Harford. The first objectives of the PR Team are: 1. Find how to get a message board of our own. 2. Develop a list of actions to execute when Squeak 3.10 is released. 3. Develop a list of actions for the Smalltalk Solutions conference. I think this is going to be fun, Chris Cunnington Toronto

Ralph, I agree that simpler is often better, which is precisely why many of my (Dolphin) tests are not simple, in the sense that they use helper methods, many of which appear to belong in the TestCase hierarchy. If I were to follow your suggestion, I would have to duplicate those methods to get the tests to run at all. Dolphin's SUnitBrowser is a great tool, but I don't use it very often. It is great for figuring out whether all is well, or for finding failing tests. For work on a given failing test or group of tests, I use doits. Most of my methods have a comment that looks something like ThisOrThatTestCase prod:#testSomething. #prod: arranges for setup and teardown, and either goes straight to a walkback on error/halt, or does _nothing_ if all is well. Such comments frequently find there way into domain classes, so it becomes easy to restart a failing test. Finally, I have TestCase class>>runTestsReferencing: allowing scripts such as TestCase runTestsReferencing:#toddsBug. TestCase runTestsReferencing:#realizeGizmo:using:. ... where #toddsBug is a symbol strewn throughout the code for my cash cow. Todd reported it, so it was only fair to immortalize him. #realizeGizmo:using: is ficticious, there are several like-named methods that I test along with Todd's bug. I fixed it a couple of years ago, but still find the tests useful to ensure that it stays fixed. I am confident that you could adapt or extend this idea to give you the flexibilty you seek while leaving the test case heirarchy, packaging, etc. in tact. Putting nonworking tests into separate classes and packages is in fact perfectly fine. My experience is that your arguments are wrong. Moving code around in Smalltalk is very easy. It is almost as easy to move a method from one class to another as it is to press a button. It takes MUCH longer to figure out whether you want to move it. Tests should be independent of each other, so moving it should make no difference to debugging. Wilhelm K. hash method

Hi, When I redefine the = operation for a class I should redefine its hash method. My question is about the definition of the hash method. I read that the method must return a SmallInteger whose value is related to the receiver. I would like to know if there is a general pattern adopted in Squeak for that. Giuseppe, I've added you - if I got the url wrong, please let me know. Also updated a bunch of other feeds. Diego Gómez Deck's great photos are unfortunately making the spanish planet slow to load right now; I'm not sure there's anything I can do about on my end.

SPDFTests fail

On Windows, SPDF-1.0-021a.st fails its tests on Ramon Leons 3.8.1 image Simple creation of pdf files works, but adding tiff images leaves artifacts on the squeak desktop. Did anyone manage to get this library to work, or did you all switch to latex and latex2pdf? Stephan

Thanks Lukas, I've been trying to establish if it is squeak related. When loading the library into Ramon Leon's image, it doesn't run all its tests succesfully (on Windows). I don't know if they do run succesfully on other platforms. Stephan
