[OT] Help with Apple Smalltalk 0.4

This isn't strictly Squeak related, but I wanted to play with the Smalltalk-80 implementation that spawned Squeak in the first place. I recently dug through my archives, and found original floppies for the 4 800K floppies that Apple Smalltalk 0.4 ships with. Unfortunately, I do not have Mac that still has a working floppy drive! I'm reluctant to part with the floppies, but if someone would be willing to transfer these floppies to disk images, so I could use them in an emulator, I would be happy to mail you the disks. Or, if someone might have this version of smalltalk lying around and would be willing to share (as I said, i can prove I have the original disks) that would also be greatly appreciated. BTW: Is this the version of Smalltalk-80 that Squeak central used for bootstrapping the Smalltalk-to-C translator and the Squeak virtual machine? RemoteFrameBuffer running on 3.9

Hi, this is my first post to this list. I don't know if this is the right place to write. I tried the RemoteFrameBuffer package from SqueakMap. It didn't work. I needed only to change a few things to get it running. I hope this changes are right. I don't know the usual procedure to do notification of bugs/applying code, etc. So I attach the changeset to this mail. Maybe it is of interest for anyone. regards, Norbert

Hi all Happy new years. I wish you a lot of fun and success for your squeaking projects. Now I would like to know if this is possible to fix the squeak web site. I was a nice idea to put the news seeds in the web site but but but. - we do not control the contents - some of them are not really squeaking - some of them contain a lot of typos. "Croquet Edit and Create 3d Objects Howard Stearns reciently replyed to a question from Mathieu. I thought I’d reporduce his response here. Howard give a lot of very good information about Croquet support for third party tools...." Sorry but I do not know who is mathieu :) and this give me the impression to get in a private discussion. I want to be **proud** to put a link on http:/www.squeak.org/ on important documents. So could we ut the welcome section right on the top. and the news after the portal. Stef

OLPC-like device...

Hey, Squeakers: I'm looking to put together an appliance and the OLPC device is probably closest (perhaps with some tablet PCs) to what I envision. I need a small, light, tough touch screen, no keyboard or mouse or hard-drive, but a wireless connection and maybe some flash memory. And, obviously, it has to be Smalltalk-capable. :-) Most of the interface will be on the level of fast food order taking--although, come to think of it, I probably need some handwriting-recognition functionality. I know a lot of folks deal with unusual hardware here, anyone have any thoughts? ===Blake===

Making Squeak more accessible and used - reversing the trend

All, I've been wondering how to show the power of objects and the power of an environment like smalltalk to everyday users. Probably the best way is to provide features within the environment that they can really use every day - right out of the box. The idea is secondary to my (motivated, but not much action) desire to make Squeak available and usable to everyday users. Today, popular applications are vertical and on disparate OSs. There are some applications that talk to one another using different forms of communication, depending on the OS. Some mainstream type apps are cross platform - like firefox, Thunderbird. But, this bandaid is not the vision Alan, Dan, and the rest of the Xerox PARC Learning team had for the personal computer and dynabook. I'm sure they can be improved, but I really like their ideas. I know I'm preaching to the choir! It would be nice to reverse the trend, or at the very least provide a usable alternative. The world missed a great opportunity in the early 80s. Today people really can't customize their environment to their needs - and the dynabook vision was just that. I want to see that work. If the squeak community could provide leadership by creating and producing significant features that most people need today, we might get the ball rolling for users to start using squeak and for developers to see the richness of the environment - and thus start the development cycle to provide more features for everyday users. (apps like seaside are doing significant work in this area for developers.) I believe the top applications used today, in popularity order, are: 1. Email (including calendaring) 2. Web 3. Word Processing 4. Spreadsheet 5. Presentation Maybe I missed something, or maybe I'm wrong -- this is off the top of my head. Sounds right, though. (4 of these apps are in the MS Office product and 3 in the OpenOffice package.) If we could concentrate on the first two that included critical modules that provided the popular features of an email app and a web browser (so users could mix and match and see the greatness of objects working in the environment), I think we would have gone a long way to starting this re-revolution. And, nothing is stopping us from creating new features that would be a boon to productivity. Just think of the cool things people could do if the basic building blocks (and examples of how to utilize them) were present in squeak? They may do things with email and browsing that we never thought of. And, we would be teaching them the power of the environment. Maybe this is a wild idea. But, I actually believe this has been already cited - most likely in this mailing list. It seems extremely doable. There's nothing technically hard about it. It's more of a coordination issue and, of course, a time issue (maybe we can come up with something to help the time issue for developers.) Crazy idea? Is it worth trying to get some people excited about this idea and creating some of these modules? Maybe you have a better idea to show people the power of the object and a real workable dynabook? How could we get this rolling? A dedicated team? I can certainly provide time for the management of the project(s). what do you think? -- brad fuller www.bradfuller.com

Which plugins for OSProcess?

I'm have some problems getting OSProcess 4.3 to run reliably, I'm using a VM with AioPlugin 2.0 and OSProcessPlugin 4.0.1. These are the latest versions availible via SqueakMap. Most of my testing was done in my standard development image built on the Squeak 3.9 developer image using an Exupery VM. Exupery was loaded but not running. I'm trying to get Exupery's stress test to pass which runs almost all the tests in the image 3 times. Up until now the OSProcess tests have been useful for flushing out context switching bugs. Any idea how to build a VM with OSProcess that will run 3.9 images reliably? With both AioPlugin and OSProcessPlugin installed running: OSPipeTestCase buildSuite run May lock up the image consuming 100% CPU. This only happens when AioPlugin has been built and installed. It doesn't always happen. Squeak Board 2007 elections process and timeline

Hi everyone, Its time to start our second election of the Board. I think this is very important - I think that having an elected board has significantly improved some things about how the community works: 1. We have been able to tackle projects that previously did not have enough consensus, such as the relicensing of Squeak and an open process for stewardship of the release process. 2. We have a solid basis for trust and diversity in our board, where before the composition of the leadership may have seemed somewhat haphazard. I personally think we had a pretty kick-ass board this last year. While it got off to a somewhat quiet start, recently there have been quite regular meetings of the board, with updates to the mailing list, and additions to the board agenda regularly solicited. Do you agree this worked well? do you think you can do better? Well, this is your opportunity. Starting today, and for the next 2 weeks (until 18th February '07), candidates for the Squeak board are invited to announce themselves on this mailing list. If you do not wish to run yourself, but would like to see either a particular Squeaker as a candidate, or you want something about this election or board term to happen differently than is described below, right now is the time to start discussing right on this list. If you are not sure how to go about it, feel free to send a mail to the elections team mailing list, or me personally. In particular, when applying, candidates are encouraged to mention their background, general reasons for running, and particular plans if they get elected. Other candidates and all squeakers are invited to pose additional questions. What happens then? the following is our planned schedule, and we don't expect it to change much. For 2 weeks starting from the 18th, prospective voters are asked to make sure they are registered. Remember that the basic criterion for voting is having an SqP account that is validated at least to the Apprentice level. This is also a good time to talk to other Squeaker communities and get them involved. As in the previous elections, we will accept votes from other communities, but to waive the SqP requirement, we need a well known representative of this community to contact us at the elections mailing list. The voters list will be finalized on the 3rd of March, and the CIVS (http://www.cs.cornell.edu/andru/civs.html) election started.
