intersection: method for dictionaries flaky

When I run the following code: | a b ans | ans := Array new: 2. a := Dictionary new. b := Dictionary new. a at: 1 put: $a; at: 2 put: $b; at: $3 put: $c. b at: 1 put: $a; at: 2 put: $x; at: $3 put: $b. self halt. ans at: 1 put: (a intersection: b). ans at: 2 put: (b intersection: a). ans I get output: an Array(a Dictionary(1->$a 2->$b ) a Dictionary($3->$b 1->$a )) In other words, the "intersection:" method is not symmetric for Dictionaries. As a mathematician I find this very disturbing. I propose that the intersection of two Dictionaries should either a) Return the intersection of the keys of the Dictionaries. Not an intuitive answer either but better than now. For example, what would you expect the intersection of two MethodDictionaries to be? b) Generate the shouldNotImplement error. My preference is for b) as it is straightforward to get answer a) or the current answer if that is what you want. We could even make methods for these, say "intersectionKeys:" and "intersectionValues:" (values are from receiver) I am asking because I am currently implementing the "intersection:" method for sets as an optimization and unfortunately my code applies to dictionaries as well. (And I change the result for dictionaries). Yet another example of why Dictionary should NOT be a subclass of Set. Now the tough question: Does, and if so where, Squeak and the many Squeak packages depend upon the current behavior of "intersection:" with respect to dictionaries? Perhaps Dictionary should implement "intersection:" and have it invoke "intersectionValues". The Dictionary "intersection:" method could then be marked as deprecated. How ofter does a method become deprecated at its time of creation? :-) Ralph Boland

What video capturing software do you use?

It is better to capture at a higher or equal resolution to what the finished product will be and downsize it if necessary in the export from Movie Maker. I believe that to syncronize the voice audio in Movie Maker, it may be better to record it in one long take. You may have to fiddle with that a bit. It is definitely better to capture video with a dual core CPU so that the capture process only minimally affects the playing process. The book "The Art of Machinima" by Paul Marino recommends FRAPS for capturing video, Windows Movie Maker for editing, and VirtualDub for any final format conversion. I believe that there is an online forum for Mahinima that probably has more information, and this has been discussed in the forums for CMU's Alice too, although the 2.2 version of Alice has video capture built in. Smalltalk vs SmalltalkImage current woes

I am currently using the Cuis, which doesn't having a 'SmalltalkImage current' refactoring.. And this difference is a bit frustrating to me, especially when code which have to be ported from Squeak, i need to visit all the places and fix the references. I was not here when this change was introduced, and you maybe know , that i'm a heated enemy of global state. But i understand the reasoning of dissection the Smalltalk dictionary of globals from the rest of service methods & additional state, which is needed and which were putted in SmalltalkImage class. But the more i thinking about it, the more i feel that this 'dissection' can be done in least intrusive way which is much friendlier to 'old ways' but also plays well with 'current ways'. So, what i'm proposing: - make a dictionary of globals a pure dictionary, without any extra unrelated methods. - completely move all fat stuff into SmalltalkImage from SystemDictionary class - add 'globals' ivar to SmalltalkImage class , and add proxy methods for accessing the dictionary, like #at: #at:put: etc. then simply: Smalltalk at: #Smalltalk put: (SmalltalkImage current). Now, Smalltalk == SmalltalkImage current and everyone is happy: - dictionary lives in separate ivar, - fat & boring housekeeping stuff lives in SmalltalkImage instance. Folks - Just a quick question: I know some of you have made videos of Squeak and I'd like to give that a shot myself (via Vimeo etc). What software do you use to create such videos? I'm in particular interested in anything that works on PCs and where you can do voice-overs afterwards (I'm not good at doing and talking at the same time when I need to concentrate ;-) Thanks for any help! Did Alice wander?

I was reading about SqueakMap and came across the Swiki page for Alice http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/1861 Is anyone actively using Alice in Squeak? - The page was last edited in 2004 - The first link is dead - The second link goes to the new, improved Sun sponsored all Java version of Alice, which appears to be healthy - The third link downloads a Ph.D. dissertation from 1997 - After the outdated info is a rant on the shortcomings of OpenGL. It just starts up, mid stream, "There is a serious design flaw in the lighting or rather the shading." This should be removed. - A search on the Swiki for Alice includes a page on Falice which links to www.falice.com which is a parked domain. Last but not least, when I try to load "FullImageProjectAlice" I get errors. Very likely I am doing something wrong. I using the #valueWithEnoughArguments: in my project but i found that BlockClosure doesn't implements that in 3.10 image i updated from trunk. There is, however #valueWithPossibleArgs: anArray But its a bit different , because it ensuring that block will be evaluated even if you passing not enough arguments to it. Strange design choice, btw: valueWithPossibleArgs: anArray ^numArgs = 0 ifTrue: [self value] ifFalse: [self valueWithArguments: (numArgs = anArray size ifTrue: [anArray] ifFalse: [numArgs > anArray size ifTrue: [anArray, (Array new: numArgs - anArray size)] ifFalse: [anArray copyFrom: 1 to: numArgs]])] Does it makes sense to pass 'anArray, (Array new: numArgs - anArray size)' at all, because blocks usually using all arguments they expecting, and there is 99.9% probability that passing nils to it will lead to errors. Round rect drawing

I found that Andreas posted an update recently Morphic-ar.136.mcz Proper round rect drawing. Instead of just corner rounding we can now draw round rects just like any other rectangle with an optional corner radius, for example: Display getCanvas frameAndFillRoundRect: (100@100 extent: 200@50) radius: 10 fillStyle: Color white borderWidth: 2 borderColor: Color black. Want to ask, is this a sign of making #roundCornersOf:during: & friends deprecated and use a new direct messages instead whenever it should be used? -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.
