This would help people deploy the application but still access the dev tools in production situations. Something that is AFAIK only possible in Smalltalk. Another question: did you already integrate my suggestion for the version ressource in the *.rc file of the VM build? Nebraska-edc.15 in trunk unloadable

Edgar, I started up my trunk development image today and as usual started by checking for updates. I had also done this yesterday. The very first update it seems for me was your Nebraska-edc.15. Loading this resulted in an emergency debugger with a DNU on WorldState>>remoteCanvasesDo:. Ken

Hi Juan, In Cuis i noted this method to avoid creating Delays in tight loops: interCyclePause: milliSecs "delay enough that the previous cycle plus the amount of delay will equal milliSecs. If the cycle is already expensive, then no delay occurs. However, if the system is idly waiting for interaction from the user, the method will delay for a proportionally long time and cause the overall CPU usage of Squeak to be low." | currentTime wait | waitDelay ifNil: [ waitDelay _ Delay forMilliseconds: 50 ]. Preferences serverMode ifFalse: [ (lastCycleTime notNil and: [CanSurrenderToOS ~~ false]) ifTrue: [ currentTime _ Time millisecondClockValue. wait _ lastCycleTime + milliSecs - currentTime. (wait > 0 and: [ wait <= milliSecs ] ) ifTrue: [ waitDelay setDelay: wait; wait ] ] ] ifTrue: [ waitDelay wait ]. lastCycleTime _ Time millisecondClockValue. CanSurrenderToOS _ true. It seems to me that if you switch Preferences serverMode to true, then the waitDelay duration will be undetermined instead of being 50ms. Unless there is some special code to reset the waitDelay to nil that I'am not aware of... What do you think? Nicolas

[ANN] Tutorial: build a custom VM/app/setup for Win32

Hi Andreas and all, as requested and as I promised to deliver in [1] I wrote a short tutorial on how to build a custom application using squeak Smalltalk for windows based systems (including building a custom VM and up to the final setup). Maybe this helps people building apps with Squeak, Cuis or Pharo... I wrote the html page in the style of squeakvm.org, so Andreas should be able to just throw it into "platforms\win32\docs" and all links should work. Feel free to try, correct bugs or add additional stuff. The file is attached. Alice...

I've used Alice (Java) to teach programming to my daughter. But I don't think it's really a good way to introduce the basics of smalltalk or even Java... I also have used scratch. If the intent is to use programming learning material written in squeak, I think scratch is a really good tool. Otherwise, one could take a look at Etoys which is much closer to teaching to program in squeak/smalltalk. CdAB

A license in method/comment stamps

Hello list, on a recent SOB meeting someone recalled the idea of adding a 'license' field to method stamps. I proposed this maybe a year ago, but at that time, it was seem to have a short life period, because of upcoming Spoon release, which contains a full method history and supports a much better organized method history/author/license tracking. In our current state, when we have a /trunk , we need, however some kind of assurance that all submissions going to trunk is license-clean. So, it is like that proposed change gives us a quick & fast recipe how to assure that. I use Linux so, to make fileOuts readable, I modified method FileStream>>concreteStream to: concreteStream "Who should we really direct class queries to? " ^CrLfFileStream "Original line: ^ MultiByteFileStream." Once I make this modification I cannot download packages from SqueakMap Package Loader. In this case I was downloading Shout but I have seen the same problem with other packages. When I undo the change things are fine again. Greetings from Porto Alegre, Brasil! As I write this from breakfast, the sun is coming up over the city. I'll soon be joined by the ten of us who have traveled here to represent Squeakland Foundation and our respective Etoys organizations. Most of us flew in yesterday, then met last night for a wonderful dinner hosted by Intel, one of the conference sponsors. It was very nice seeing everyone last night. While we speak frequently together through Skype and Qwaq, there's nothing quite like meeting in person. At dinner we had time to discuss ours lives outside Etoys, getting to know each other in a way that's much harder to do through the Internet. Today should be quite a day. At this point, more than 280 people have registered for the conference. Given that the main conference room seats 250, it might be standing room only. We plan to chat throughout the conference on Etoys chat channel (http://chat.squeakland.org ), which you can read later at the chat log (http://squeakland.org/sm/storybot ). Find A Project Dead Links

When I select "Project / find a project" a dialog box opens with a list of download sites. None of the download sites work. Are there sites that work? Did SqueakMap replace this function, or do schools configure it as required? I suggest removing the dead links and establishing a sample download site.
