You might want to mention that in most cases, people can designate United Way contributions to 502(c)(3) organizations. I think UWay skims off 10% for "handling" at least this was the case last year during the general campaingn. If you have people who are "encouraged" to give to United Way, this might be a nice avenue to raise funds. Dan

very new etoys user question

I am a primary teacher who has introduced her class to Squeak. My kids have made cars move around the screen, and want to make rockets move on a background. I have "Powerful Ideas..." but can't work out what to do to assemble their painted backgrounds and their rocket object together. Do I put them both on a playfield? How do I get them there and alter the size of the playfield. I can see what to do with the scripts when I have them in the same environment. Sorry about this super-basic question but can't find another forum to assist. Happy to receive suggestions for a more suitable discussion group if there is one for newbies with etoys. Sue

'Help Us Grow' campaign is launched

Dear Squeaklanders - I am writing to announce Viewpoints Research Institute's first "Help us Grow" fundraising drive. If you'll take a look at http://www.squeakland.org, you'll see the details of our campaign. As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization it is incumbent upon us to solicit and receive funds from individuals, corporations and other grant-making agencies to keep our tax exempt status, and enable ongoing work. This is the first time we're appealing to you, our community, for your help, not only/necessarily for your contribution, but for your help to spread the word, share Squeak with others, and use your own networks to help us raise funds so that we can continue to develop the Squeak and Etoy frameworks, the website, and this community. In the spirit of open source development and shareware, we ask for your help to allow us to continue our research, development, sharing and dissemination effort. I didn't realize how spoiled we Americans are. Most of us can pretty much assume we'll have access to high speed connections at home, work, or in between sitting in a Starbucks or in my vehicle with my laptop (as long as I'm in Manhattan). Apparently that's not so with our friends from abroad. I'm looking forward to using the forum. In fact, I pushed for its inception. Guess we need to learn to be a bit more sensitive. I applaud Michael's efforts and hope that a solution to this problem can still be found.
