But we (the Squeakland developers) cannot do much about packaging bugs. It may be helpful if you comment on that distro bug page, just to let the maintainers know people are interested in getting this fixed. Until the Ubuntu packages are fixed you might try our DEB: http://squeakland.org/download/ Uninstall the distro packages and install the Squeakland one. Alternatively, we are working on a version of Etoys that does not require installation at all but runs directly from a USB flash memory stick. I cannot find an agenda for Squeakfest LA 2009. Is it defined at this point - at least I'd like to know what time it starts on the 10th and what time it ends on the 12th. Thanks, Milan

Sketch Divider

Avigail, This is the project I showed at Squeakfest. It creates separeted sketches from a sketch based on the color. http://dev.laptop.org/~yoshiki/etoys/SketchDivider.002.pr There is instruction in the project, but here it is: - Make a painting. Use several different colors in the painting. - Set the "target" variable of the DoIt object to the new painting. One way to do it is to get halo of the sketch, click on the orange tile handle and drop it onto the "dot" in the script below and execute the script. Or, open the viewer of the DoIt object, click on the readout of the target variable (the cursor changes to a cross hair shape) and click on the new painting. - Press the blue and red "Do it" button. and the Sketch are divided based on the same color. The code is written textually and uses some Squeak tricks. Basically, you can query a sketch the list of colors it uses. So, after getting the list of colors, it takes each color from the list, replace all other colors from the sketch with the transparent color, and make a new sketch for each color. There would be a more fun Etoys way, but that is homework for others... -- Yoshiki

Gallery Maker: A way to make your own gallery from projects on server

Hi, Randy and everybody, I made a kind of template project that can be used to make your own "gallery of projects" This one is made to create a gallery for a web directory. http://dev.laptop.org/~yoshiki/etoys/GalleryMaker.003.pr The steps are described in the project as well, but here it is (after loading GalleryMaker into a fresh Etoys session): - Let's say you have all projects on a server and accessible via HTTP. In this example, it is http://dev.laptop.org/~yoshiki/etoys/. Change it to your server directory (with trailing slash kept). - Download all projects from the server directory to a local directory. In this example, it is "C:\squeak\olpc\etoys\". - Load all projects from the local directory into this project. You load each of them manually and go back to the previous project. Or, set the local directory name in the below dialog (currently showing C:\squeak\olpc\etoys\) and push "Load Projects" button. - Next, press the "GalleryMaker" button. It'll substitute the little - names in the project thumbnails. Now you can save this project. - Quit Etoys and load the project again. If you click on a thumbnail and it seems take longer than usual, it means that the project is loaded from the server and working as intended. Here, you can remove the garbage, rename the project and save it again. And, you are done! If you have more questions, please let me know. Currently, the version number matters. It would be nice if the clicking a thumbnail brings in the latest version of the project automatically, but I stumbled on some blocks and don't go there this time... -- Yoshiki

Greetings from Porto Alegre, Brasil! As I write this from breakfast, the sun is coming up over the city. I'll soon be joined by the ten of us who have traveled here to represent Squeakland Foundation and our respective Etoys organizations. Most of us flew in yesterday, then met last night for a wonderful dinner hosted by Intel, one of the conference sponsors. It was very nice seeing everyone last night. While we speak frequently together through Skype and Qwaq, there's nothing quite like meeting in person. At dinner we had time to discuss ours lives outside Etoys, getting to know each other in a way that's much harder to do through the Internet. Today should be quite a day. At this point, more than 280 people have registered for the conference. Given that the main conference room seats 250, it might be standing room only. We plan to chat throughout the conference on Etoys chat channel (http://chat.squeakland.org ), which you can read later at the chat log (http://squeakland.org/sm/storybot ). Stop by and say hello so you can be part of the event, from wherever you happen to be now. Have a look at the schedule (http://squeakland.org/squeakfest/brasil/schedule/ ) to follow along. Hi everyone, The latest human spammer (barmotbajota) put me over the top. I've made it so a forum user must have an email address that's also subscribed to the mailing lists for a post to make it to the list. This should solve the problem for the mailing lists (not for the forums though). Magic in the skies

Hi, Attached is a project written a few months back by a 11-year old Squeak newbie inspired by watching the skies. Click yellow button in script3 to reset and then the start the timer in script1. Now sit back to enjoy the spectacle. It is best played with the orb pointed towards the Sun (outdoors is best, through a window is better). I found this "story" to be quite superior to many textbook descriptions of this grand event. Subbu
