Congratulations to Our Students!

Well, with some help from Chip Mefford I've managed to fix the problem with the SOC mailing list, at least for now. So while it's working again I believe I will take this opportunity to congratulate the students who were granted slots by Google. Luigi Panzeri Francois Stephany Gwenaël Casaccio Phua Khai Fong Cédrick Beler You guys put forth the effort to write up good applications and communicate your willingness to work. Well now you won the right to work, go to it! Details of the accepted applications can be found at http://code.google.com/soc/2008/squeak/about.html For those students who were not accepted, do not give up. ESUG is hosting a similar projects called SummerTalk where you have another opportunity to apply for sponsorship for developing Squeak related software. Hopefully an ESUG member will follow up this message with more details. You students who were accepted: You have a little break before the official work period starts, but I strongly suggest you avail yourselves of this time to get up to speed, particularly if you are new to Squeak and Smalltalk. Make liberal use of this mailingglist as well as the other mailing lists such as squeak-dev, beginners, and any lists specific to your project area. Also feel free to come by #squeak or #croquet on irc.freenode.net and chat with mentors or others who can help you get past rough spots. We also have a blog where students can share their progress with others, details on that soon. Congratulations! Ken

We got a Fifth slot

This probably is not going to get through to you all since I haven't had time to fiddle with Mailman today but I thought I would let everyone know that I managed to finagle one more slot out of Leslie Harmon (actually, it was quiet easy, I just asked at the right time) and so we now have 5 slots rather than just 4. Hi all, the almost-definitive slot allocation count from Google is out, and we didn't get any new student slots. It's time we finalize the list of our accepted students. Now, this is best done on IRC, so it would be better to have a meeting on IRC and decide which students we want to accept. We'll meet at 22:00 UTC on #squeak-gsoc. I still don't know if I'll be able to attend, though (I'm on the late shift tonight, so I can get home at a random time between 10pm and 1am). In any case I'll send some notes to Ken so that he'll be able to manage the process in my absence. Ciao, Giovanni

Voting policy

Now that the voting period has begun, I think we should create a few voting policies. I voted and commented on every application, so you can use what I did as an example. Here are the rough guidelines I tried to follow: - I voted on every project with an interested mentor - I gave between +4 and -1 for enthusiasm - I gave between +4 and 1 for project benefit to squeak (a project can never have non-positive utility) - I gave between 0 and -3 for misc deductions, such as: - The project is too big: -2 - The project is not described well enough, or too research-y: -1 - The student is overqualified: -1 or -2 Overall, my cumulative votes fell between +6 and -1. -- Matthew Fulmer -- http://mtfulmer.wordpress.com/

If you are an organization administrator, please login to the web app and let us know ASAP how many students your project can actually support. You can do this by entering a numeric value in the "Desired Number of Projects" field on your organization's profile page. Why This List Can and Will Change: - It is possible that some projects have been assigned more students than they can reasonably handle. In that case, the student slots will be reallocated to a different project. - We have currently allocated funding for 1,000 student projects. If we discover that there are great proposals going unfunded, we *may* be able to fund up to 100 additional student projects. We would allocate these extra slots based on need (as determined by the requested number of student slots listed in your organization profile). Please make this number realistic. E.g. if you have 10 great proposals but only two mentors, asking for 10 slots is likely not reasonable. If you have 10 mentors but only 3 great proposals, only ask for 3 slots. Asking for More Slots: It's critical for us to know how many students each project can reasonably support in order for us to allocated more slots to projects in need. The best way to tell us that you need more slots is to fill out the number of slots you need in your organization profile. We will rerun our allocation script later this week to get a better sense for student allocations, then after that we will discuss with those projects in need about adjusting your slot counts. (IRC meeting likely, stay tuned.) Until we know how many students each project really wants, adjusting slot counts is not a useful exercise. Preliminary Slot Counts: Your organization's slot count is listed here by your organization's short form name. If you don't know your organization's short form name, you can find it by going to http://code.google.com/soc/2008/ and clicking on your organization's name on the page. Your org short form name will be included in the URL to your "about" page. For example, the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence's short form name is siai, as can be seen in this URL for their about page: http://code.google.com/soc/2008/siai/about.html Here's the slot count list: ... squeak: 4 ...
