My current code doesn't set any explicit extents except the one set by #initialExtent. Using your trick of setting the spacer morph color to blue allows you to see quickly what is going on. The change set I sent had the extent set on the spacer morph. You can see the spacer morph's width floating out to a maximum of that set by the extent. The TextMorph's in a column all ended up the same width. BTW - As Andrew suggested, I went back to a StringMorph and everything still looks right. I'm sure I tried this last night too.... -david

[previous discussion snipped] OK - perhaps I simplified it too much. Attached is a small changeset that adds a HallOfFame class for recording top scores for games. It has been spliced into Tim Olson's SameGame. In the class comment for HallOfFame is some code that will display 4 rows of hall of fame with varying length strings for the names and scores. The names are all left justified (expected), the scores are all right justified. (why?) The names are editable, the scores are not. (why?) I get the same results in 2.2 and 2.3Beta. There are some methods with the suffix "old" that provide more complicated experiments versions. I modeled this on Scott's Preferences panel (ok, I started with his code). I was trying to get the scores to right justify to no avail and finally ended up with this very simple version that justifies correctly but I don't understand why. David, Here is Andrew's example reworked a bit to achieve what I think you are after: | outer aRow | outer _ RectangleMorph new extent: 400@100. aRow := AlignmentMorph newRow color: Color lightGreen. aRow addMorph: (TextMorph new width: 100; contentsWrapped: 'hellothere'; lock); addMorphBack: (AlignmentMorph newSpacer: Color blue); addMorphBack: (TextMorph new width: 100; contentsWrapped: (12323 printString); rightFlush; lock). outer addMorph: aRow. outer openInWorld. Socket class|#createIfFail:

I'm not sure if this bug has been noted in 2.3, but in 2.2 the method Socket class|#createIfFail: begins with: sock _ self new initialize. It should say sock _ self new. since the initialization is done in the #new method. Saludos, Leandro

I'm trying to create a row on a pane with a left justified name, some space and a right justified number. I created the row as follows: aRow := AlignmentMorph newRow color: aColor. aRow addMorph: (TextMorph new contents: aName); addMorphBack: (AlignmentMorph newSpacer: Color transparent); addMorphBack: (TextMorph new contents: aNumber printString). Everything displays correctly, but: - Why is the first submorph left justified and the last one right justified? - Why does the first submorph allow editing and the last one doesn't? - How can I prevent editing? I want display only. I tried to use StringMorph's but after much experimentation with wrapping in AlignmentMorphs, I trimmed the example down to this. Thanks - I'm finally trying to learn Morphic so I can teach a 14 year old... -david

[Dredging into my memory, and anecdotal from a friend of mine...] I think Sun uses (or at least used to) something like this. It is based on Forth and is called OpenROM or something like that. I believe that all the adapters had enough of a driver stored onboard to support booting. It was supposed to be able to run on any of the platforms they supported. I just did a quick search and found references to OpenROM and OpenBoot. I believe that the guy that wrote this is a pretty well know Forth personage. Now the buzzword is I2O. Some believe this to be a plot by Intel to sell more 960's since most (all) I20 adapters have a 960 onboard. Remote access via telnet and modems on serial ports is important. Paul's embedded Squeak might be a good choice. Some of my concerns are: -- should you run in scripting mode where source is read, compiled and executed or should you support saving images or some other format of compiled code. [Python has a nice model for this]. -- how do you develop and debug. The Smalltalk development environment is very wedded to the windowing environment. - PicoBSD as the base of a Squeak only machine If you are tempted to run a bare DOS version of Squeak, this is an interesting alternative. It is completely free with open source. 1.44 Megabytes will give you a running system with networking (ethernet, ppp, slip...) As for graphics - FreeBSD V3.0 (which PicoBSD is constructed from) included a new graphics library that should be fine for porting Squeak to. It should be a lot lighter (memory and CPU cycles) than using X. What are the downsides? -- It only supports x86 at the moment. There is an Alpha port substantially complete, but that's it. -- I think that the x86 machines that most people might be interested in dedicating too Squeak are too slow for doing interesting Squeak things. You still need a fast machine to run Morphic. If you want to use Squeak as a scripting engine (where the scripts are smalltalk source), then I think the compiler is very, very slow compared to other scripting languages. -david

Sound help needed

In the course of moving from R3 to R4 of the BeOS, there was a major change in the Media API (including sound). As a result some of the sound classes are not working properly. The primary symptom is that " AbstractSound stereoBachFugue play" runs too fast (like an over speeding tape player). Does this mean that we are sampling too slowly now? Is there a way I can experiment with sample rates from inside Squeak (messages that allow me to change sample rates)?
