Squeak on a PDA

Hello, Regarding the problems that people have been experiencing about the screen on a PDA being too small: I was wondwering how difficult it would be to create a Morph that would zoom the contents of a project and allow interaction with the objects within the project through the zoomed interface. In other words, the zoomer morph would look like a project view before one enters it, except that one can interact with the morphs in it without having to enter the project. I envision a rectangle that could be sized to the physical screen of the PDA. The bottom of the rectangle would include icons to zoom the view in and out, and some other buttons to support click modifiers (like a button for an ALT key, right, middle mouse buttons etc. maybe shortcuts to a few other things). One could move around the zoomed view by clicking on the four edges. This morph would allow us to start using the existing stuff on the small screen. Eventually we can add extra support to morphs to do intelligent resizing. For example, depending on the zoom level, less important information is progressively discarded and/or less important information gets small faster than more important information. What do you think? Is there something in the existing image that comes close to doing this? Later, -- Kris

By the way, priority shouldn't matter; the issue is *buffer sizes*. In ESD, as far as I can tell, and as the authors told me, there isn't a way to minimize the buffer to, say, 1 second of audio. Instead, you have to wait for the network socket to block, which might hold *several* seconds of data. A three-second delay just seems so poor of an implementation, for Squeak's purposes, that it wouldn't be worth bothering with. Just imagine a morph bouncing off a wall, and then going halfway back across the screen before the sound is heard.... -Lex

Andreas, I just tried it and did not experience an error. Since there may be a variety of factors that contribute to the error, a stack trace would be helpful in determining what's broken. [ENH]MPEGPlayerMorph (0.5)

Attached is a very basic MPEGPlayerMorph It has currently three buttons: Open: opens a menu so you can locate a mpeg/mp3 file and select it, and then starts executing what ever it is. Stop: stop playing the stream (s). Play: Plays the stream (s) from beginning. Also added is a progress bar, so you can see how much is remaining of the song/video :-) Please enhance this more ! Karl (0.4) Added everyones favorite: LedCharacterMorph, so now the title of the song is diplayed in true retro fashion! (0.5) Slider instead of progress bar so one can slide back and forth:-) Play button resumes where stop was pressed. A issue with the MPEGPlayer came up and JMM said he will look into it. A workaround is part of this change set (0.5) and some issues with playback of videos after sliding came up. Hopefully these will be resoved soon and we can all slide happily:-) To do: Fast Backwards, Fast Forward & Jump to start buttons. More and more:-)

I dunno. Even if multiple opens are no longer a problem, sound servers still have benefits over /dev/dsp. So, it would be really interesting to hear from someone who uses Squeak through esd using the esddsp wrapper. From the docs, I don't see how they could get latency down to anything reasonable. But it would be nice to see some verification of this. (When I try it, it doesn't work at all....) -Lex

RE: FixedPoint asString?

In Scheme do any numbers start out inexact except, perhaps, floating point values? Hmmm...I guess I can also see that many functions (e.g. trig functions and logarithms) might produce inexact values. Or is my dislike for floating point numbers coloring my view here too much? If we get rid of floating point (or restrict its ease of use dramatically) do we reduce the degree of inexactness in mathematical expressions by any meaningful degree?
