I think this has lots of benefits for both projects (if I understand correctly what you want to do, there is overlap between this project and the stable Squeak project launched by John Sarkela). I am afraid that by starting from the very first release we will lose a lot of development tools and bugfixes while we are bootstrapping. Of course, starting with the shrunk image has its problems too. Whatever approach, it is maybe a god thing to incorporate the lessons learned from the stable squeak project (and vice versa). Sorry for my previous message. In fact, I do need to sleep. I was stupid enough to file in the old version. QuickTimeMoviePlayer getAndOpen works fine. And BTW, I don't get garbled image when I resize the window (either by the pop-up menu or simply by resizing). Thanks for QT in squeak. It would be a great thing to have. In order to figure this out, it looks like you'd want to start looking at the methods mouseEnter: and mouseLeave: in PluggableTextMorph/PluggableListMorph/ScrollPane. You'll see in PluggableTextMorph>>mouseEnter: that it sets the newKeyboardFocus: when the mouse enters the current pane. You could try adding "self halt"s in there and do some debugging to see what's going on. Then, try adding your own modifier key commands to set the newKeyboardFocus: yourself. (I'm not sure what key combo would be best for this... I think Ctrl-arrow would be ideal because you could move up and down as well as left and right between panes. Hmm, unfortunately Ctrl-arrow is taken... perhaps Cmd/Alt-arrow.) [ANN] Julia Set Explorer

Julia Sets are a popular family of fractals to play with, and there are tons of programs that will display Julia Sets in beautiful detail. However, watching a screensaver that popped up on my monitor a few days ago, I found a way to write a tool for *finding* good Julia Sets. So I put together a tool that lets you quickly choose different parameters for the Julia Set and get a sketch of what the Julia Set will look like. Overall, it took an hour of hacking, an hour of UI work, and about an hour of packaging. For such a short time spent, I don't even mind if my advisor finds out. :) Check it out at: http://chaos.resnet.gatech.edu:8000/~lex/julexp/ Of course, the not-so-hidden agenda is to try and make standalone programs in Squeak. At this point, I can generate for RedHat/x86, Linux, and Windows quite quickly. Macs ought to be easy as well, except that I can't seem to find a silly program to generate Stuffit files. (Anyone know of such a utility that will run on Unices?) Comments and contributions welcomed. :) As well, feel free to share any cool Julia Sets you find. -Lex

As is, without any optimization whatsoever, I just loaded and ran a 1-line Squeak script in .91 seconds. That's already reasonable for many applications, and it will get much much better if anyone bothers to work on Squeak's boot sequence. Still, I honestly find it hard to care much about this exact scenario. First, I personally like to work from Squeak better than emacs, bash, Windows explorer, or anything else I've tried, and so my natural inclination is to call programs from Squeak, not vice versa. Second, even if I were to develop a command-line Squeak program, I would still take the approach of using the GUI and growing a custom image. Yes, it takes up disk space. A few megabytes of disk space really isn't a big deal on most computers, though. Certainly it's not a big enough deal to dump Squeak's tools and go back to chiselling stone with vi. Now, this is not to say that everyone can just go out and start writing Unix utilities in Squeak, because first you have to load David Lewis's OSProcess. Seriously, there will surely be walls that people bump into, but the first few are much milder than they may appear. -Lex

A missing period in the version of Morph | addCustomMenuItems: aCustomMenu hand: aHandMorph that comes as part of MorphicWrappers caused a MessageNotUnderstood when the red halo button was used. Fix attached.

Swiki history question

To all grand masters of Swiki ;-) While working on my squeaklet server setup the following questions came up: - to what extend do you keep the history of changes for a given page? - what is the average rate of changes? - how do you deal with malicious users? Do you just take the calculated risk and roll back to earlier versions of affected pages? How much of a problem is this anyway? Any insights/remarks/statistics would be helpful! Thanks Michael
