I thought I would just ask this smalltalk list a couple of questions - I am new to smalltalk and this list has been highly recommended in solving most smalltalk problems - guess its because all of you are smalltalk gods or something... anyways... here it goes. I have a record subclass declared as follows: Object subclass: #RECORD - I have various methods for this. I want to make an array of records - so its one array that stores of type records - which I have defined I have tried the following: OrderedCollection subclass: #People - dont know what methods I need - do I have to have an initial 'instance creation'! This does compile but it complains at the following: Smalltalk at: #arecord put: (People new) ! Just complains about Object People - hangs. All I need is a way of storing these records in an array. I could use ARRAY instead of OrderedCollection but I want a dynamic array. If anyone knows how to do this - please can you get back in contact with me, I will add in all my own methods for my People subclass after I have the basic one working - so I can add records to it. Folks - Now out on the servers, some pretty interesting goodies... First, in time for the holidays, we have two classic games. Mines from David A. Smith is ready to gobble up your spare minutes and hours. And an entire game of Chess, from Andreas Raab, which he says needs a bit more programming to play a decent game. Who wants a Squeak game that needs more programming? Oh, I see ;-). There are several bug fixes, plus a whole rewrite of Morphic borders from Andreas. Lots of cool new styles are now available. Then there's a high-speed reader/writer for JPEG format from Juan Manuel Vuletich. And streaming sound support from John Maloney. Last, but not least: An entire JPEG movie morph from John Maloney and Juan Manuel Vuletich. You mean MPEG, don't you? No! Juan's JPEG plugin is so fast that you can show movies from it at 30-40 frames per second. This means we have a movie format that is open, can be written from Squeak, and is something like 20 times more compact than our old .movie format. For example, a several minute clip from Fantasia ('Night on Bald Mountain') shrunk from about 176 to under 6 megabytes. On the other hand, JPEG movies tend to be 1.5 to 3.0 times the size of an MPEG movie at a similar quality level. The class JPEGMovieFile contains methods for converting both MPEG or Squeak movies into JPEG movies. JPEGMovieFile implements a subset of the MPEGFile protocol so that JPEG movies can be played by MPEGMoviePlayerMorph. As another possibility, how about something really radical; declare a functional/technical aim for the next release and make the release when it is achieved. Extras not anticipated would be welcome, as would bugfixes. By having a list of aims published we might be able to achieve some more effective collaboration and avoid duplication. Bugfixes would be put out via the update stream for the previous release as is currently done. tim

Screen coords for a glyph?

Hi all, Is there a clever way of learning the position of a specific glyph in a text morph? I'm trying to anchor morphs to specific sections of text and cannot see a means of determining the coordinates apart from recalculating the layout of the text from StrikeFont. If there isn't already a built-in method, is it possible to send a handmorph to an offset in a text (and then have it report its position)? Michael Cole

People are usually interested in two things - the new cool version (definitely majority of list participants) and a recent version that's known good. The new cool version is easy to locate - just d/l anything, and then update it. Under the snapshot regime, we would have this available less of the time. To me the fact that there's always something happening is very cool. OTOH, making the current newest a snapshot will not work that well for getting a stable version - stability comes from testing. Like you say, we don't have enough feedback from active stable-version users to make "stable means well-tested" mean anything. A cheap mans version we could have is this - have a bleeding edge version, with everything that's out, just like now. Other than that, alway maintain a pointer to some past version, that experience has shown to be stable. By this I mean you'd never say "here you go, this new version is stable, we really got 'em all this time", you'd just retroactively say, "yup, 7684 was when all the semi-dynamic-synheritance trouble began. 7683 was pretty stable though...". OTGH, when we have modules, we might find that things run significantly differently than now, so making a new scheme might be useless. Just my 2 cents. Squeak standalone

I know that some of you are interested in squeak on bare machines. Below is a small TCP/IP stack with a BSD style license. http://dunkels.com/adam/uip/ For those of you who like old machines someone has taken this and converted his old c64 to a web server using this stack. http://c64.cc65.org/ Note that I got this from NTK, so the c64 runs the risk of being slashdotted this weekend.
