ASCII Mandelbrot (was: Debugging assistance please :-) )

Thanks to both Avi and Richard for taking the time to help me out. I was confused with ifTrue: and IfFalse, I, (half), remembered that it was considered better style to bracket your boolean conditions to make things slightly more readable; but a whileTrue: is not the same as ifTrue: though... ;-) Once running I found that it was extremely slow with Transcript show: (probably because the chars had to be converted to strings and then flushed), changing things to nextPut: really sped things up. The current method code is below. Can anyone suggest anything else I could improve to make it more 'Squeak-Like' - I was thinking that sunit tests and a little refactoring would be useful next step. Hi folks, I've just made another release of OmniBrowser, which I hope will be the final alpha. There are a couple more features I want to add before moving to beta and concentrating entirely on bugfixes. Changes in this release: - Renaming a class now automatically browses references to the old name - Editing code in the Versions browser works - The 'Browse' button in the Versions browser fixed - DoIts now take place in the context of the selected class - Removing a method scans for senders - The installer now detects and works around common problems Thanks for the bug reports. When adding a release of a package, this choice is not available. I guess that I saw in your notes somewhere that this will be fixed later. 2. The "New Objects" link on the web interface doesn't work anymore. 3. This one may not be related, but when I tried to edit the package description to add a homepage, I got an error that said the package was already defined, as though I was trying to add a new package instead of editing. Hi, I'm fairly new to Squeak and Smalltalk, I've been playing with various programming snippets to improve my fluency. I have some Ruby code that generates an Ascii representation of a Mandelbrot fractal, and thought it may be fun to translate over to squeak. I've managed to tie myself in knots with a basic syntax error, and I can't spot it - can anyone mentor me and point me towards the error? Hey Goran, let's do indeed be careful not to drift down a slippery slope. Quality does matter. Your water analogy seems to show our difference nicely. You want a high *percentage* of good, commented code. I want a high *volume* of good code. I think that uncommented code can still be pretty darned good, and thus that usually: X + (good, uncommented code) > X A decent way to getting a higher volume of commented code is to put uncommented code in there and thus make it easy for people to contribute. If we reject code then we spoil the open source process we have going and make it hard for people to fix (comment) the code. But of course, putting in uncommented code reduces the *percentage* of commented code, perhaps indefinitely. I agree the *percentage* of good code would be important if Squeak were at a stage that it is worth picking it up and studying it. However, I think Squeak is at a much earlier stage right now. It is likely that huge chunks of it will be tossed entirely before we get within reach of the next system that is really a crystaline beauty worthy of study. In the meantime, functionality is extremely worthwhile, because it lets people do experiments. In short, why would the *percentage* of clear code be more important than the *volume* of clear code? -Lex

Hi folks! Well, perhaps I just opened Pandora's box :) but I hope not. David Faught recently asked about adding some kind of categories to SM for Croquet making it easy to host Croquet specific packages on SM. So I did that. :) We now have a new top level category in SM called "Squeak distribution". It currently has two sub categories - "Squeak" (official distro) and "Croquet". I have also tried to find proper descriptions and have written a new Swiki page to describe this more closely (linked from the category): http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/3877 Now... finally - to give this some "punch" - I made "Squeak distribution" mandatory for SM *packages* (not releases). Eh, what does that mean? - it means that when you create or edit a package you will have to select a distro that it is meant for. You can also add multiple distros using the brilliant (irony dripping) web UI by ctrl-clicking in the "additional categories" listbox. Of course these categories have no other use than simply categorization, so don't worry too much. The simple consequence is: - If you are publishing a package for Squeak, select "Squeak". Might work in other distros, but that is not your problem. :) - If you are publishing a package for Croquet, select "Croquet". Can probably be interpreted as if it is not likely to work in vanilla Squeak. - If you are publishing a package that you know works in both official Squeak and Croquet - select one of them, and add the other using "additional categories". And of course - if anyone wants to add a distro (Squeakland? Small-land? Squat? Fibble-dweeble-rat?) email me and I will do it. [ANN] OpenFype font viewer

For those interested in fonts and multilingualization, I published a morphic application that gives you the possibility to examine the contents of OpenType font files of types *.ttf and *.ttc. The program is written for Squeak 3.7 and 3.8 It can be downloaded from SqueakMap, where it is registered under the name OpenTypeViewer. The OpenTypeViewer does not support all features of OpenType fonts, but it can show all glyphs of a font and also all glyph substitutions.
