Tracing Messages Browser updated for 3.7

Does anyone like this? I can't live without it but I've never heard any comments or feedback about it. I think it belongs in the base image. Installing this SAR adds a preference under the "Browse" category called "traceMessages". When selected, MessageList browser profileration is reduced by indenting implementors below and outdenting senders above in the same browser, rather than opening a new browser each time. Additionally, you can very easily pare the list by multi-selecting (by click+drag or shift+click a range) and pressing command+f (for remove From browser). It's wonderfully non-intrusive, and now updated for 3.7.

VMMaker 3.7 beta2 available

The latest VMMaker package is now available on my website. This is for 3.7 and is the second beta release. For now (due to lack of effective sourceforge access) you will have to also fetch CrossPatch.zip and put the three files it contains into your copy of platfors/Cross/vm. If someone (Ned perhaps?) could upload the files it would be useful. Go to http://sumeru.stanford.edu/tim/pooters/SqFiles/packages/VMMaker and grab VMMaker3-7b2.sar and CrossPatch.zip This is experimental. VMs built from this code have been tried on several platforms with apparent success. That doesn't mean there will be no problems. Performance seems to be slightly improved according to tests so far. I have not seen nor heard of any crashes caused by the new code. It is NOT currently on SM since it is not yet the official release. What creates free memory chunk's?

I'm writing a little test function (in Slang) to check memory consistency. It's been finding free objects (header type 2). Being naive, I didn't think that these should be created except by the garbage collector when freeing objects. Not that they would cause any problems except to my memory checker. Any idea what would cause free chunks to be created in the heap by the interpreter? The only thing that I can think of is if the is VM shrinking objects. It would be a neat way to mark the left over space. Not that I've got any idea why or where it's doing this. The checker is just to help me find the causes for my memory corruption problems. So far, with an extra check to ignore the free chunks, it's running cleanly with a stock image. Which points my problems back to my code, fortunately. Bryce

How to bring money in the community

Hi all Often I start to code something and I bump into some uglyness (file systems) or some parts that are not finished (Projects) and I got slow down. Saying that part of X or Z is bad does not help, because you have the "participate" or do it yourself syndrome that I understand perfectly. Now I would be ready to ***PAY*** to have some better packages. I think that we should invent a market for better Squeak components. Even if the components get released in the image. For now we cannot pay even if we would like. So does anybody an idea how to proceed? For example, if one of you can evaluate the amount of effort to fix some broken/strange part and start with a price and participation people could then allocate money so that this part gets improved. For example: - we say the file system improvement should cost 500 $ - and that the parts are 25$ -> we need to find 20 people/companies/organization to pay or less. - once the people committed to pay then the provider do it. I would really like that we give a try because I'm ready to pay to get better software in Squeak. But right now we cannot even pay!!! Stef

Running out of memory during updates

On my machine at home (FreeBSD, 3.4-1 VM, 3.7a-5816 image) I started loading the latest updates. When 5834 started (the Accuny install, I think it is), my image started consuming vast tracts of land^Wmemory. By "vast tracts of memory" I mean "as much memory as it could squeeze out of me" - I started, as a test, squeak with "-memory 96m" and as soon as 5834 started initialising I could see squeak's memory footprint increasing my leaps and bounds. Within 10 seconds it had reached the memory limit and a low space warning popped up. Does this mean it's time I bit the bullet and hand-crafted a 3.6 VM? (This happened to me a while back (maybe a month ago?) - an update consuming all available memory, and I worked around the issue by downloading the latest 3.7a image, and working from there.) frank

Squeak3.7a-nnnn image on unix?

Hi, I'm wondering if it's possible to run a Squeak3.7a-5816 image with the 3.6g-2 Unix VM? (http://www-sor.inria.fr/~piumarta/squeak/)? When I try it a current squeak 3.7 image (plus some of my stuff): /usr/local/bin/squeak /squeak/Squeak3.7a-5816_20040330a.56.image or with a out of the box image: /usr/local/bin/squeak /squeak/Squeak3.7a-5657.image I get the following error: Segmentation fault 169947472 SystemDictionary>lowSpaceWatcher 169947852 [] in SystemDictionary>installLowSpaceWatcher 169947944 [] in BlockContext>newProcess The error seems to appear on the unix console just a moment before the squeak x-window opens. After reviewing the Smalltalk level source code it seems to install the lowSpaceWatcher but then crashes while executing it. No error log files are generated but a 1GB core dump file, squeak.core is created. For some reason Squeak is attempting to allocate a gigabyte or more of space! Maybe this is simply it's default of grabbing 1GB of memory maped space and some other error occurs that causes it to core dump, and thus it dumps it's entire virutal space. If I set memory lower it creates a smaller core dump file. There is 750MB of RAM available on the server with 1.8 GB of swap space freely available. The OS is FreeBSD 4.8. Are there any command line options that might solve this? I tried increasing the memory setting to 400m but this didn't help. (At 500m it fails to allocate memory for the heap). What is the latest image version that will work with the 3.6g-2 Unix VM? Why? What I really need is an image and vm that I can move between Unix and Windows freely to have easy development. My laptop computer where I do most of my development work is Windows. My production servers are Unix. Any ideas? Cheers, Peter ps. Ned, ====================== Anyone who sends UCS-2 (2 bytes per character) or UTF-16 over the wire is probably doing something wrong if most of the bytes are zero. ====================== Again, the device in question is quite old by computer standards, and was (arguably still is in some ways) ahead of its time, with a few staggering inefficiencies in places. ====================== UTF-8 is the preferred character encoding for this. If your characters are all in the Latin-1 set, you don't spend any extra bytes. ====================== Sounds great. ====================== You should look at Yoshiki's work. He adds new kinds of String and Character (as I recall); these carry their encoding with them. Since he's also concerned about translation and about other potential problems with Unicode and Asian languages (look up "Han Unification" for some pointers), these Strings (and Characters?) also can carry more information about desired rendering, language of origin, etc. But most of the Strings and Characters in the Squeak image should remain untouched. ====================== This is very encouraging, and suggests that Squeak will get this right. My reason for raising the concern is simply that I didn't want to back out of the _/:= hack too soon. Given Yoshiki's estimate of 3.8 or 4.0 for integration of his work, it seems wise to step back, let him give us proper back arrows, and then sort out what if anything remains to be done. If however, Squeak's unicode support was going to turn out to be bloating to images, it would find itself unused in many cases, and there would still be a need for a hack. Bill Wilhelm K.
