Wrapping COM

Hello Windows Squeakers, someone asked about a COM library wrapper in Squeak. So I started a little test to check if it's possible to wrap the ole32.dll using FFI. A first basic version is attached. It' very basic and just tries to wrap the COM GUID/ProgID behavior. Unfortunately I have a side effect when I use MS Office: COMGUID fromProgID: 'Excel.Application' returns a valid GUID and COMGUID fromProgID: 'Word.Application' returns a zero-GUID (caused by a failing call to) if use "^result" at the end of the method COMGUID>>fromString:. If I change this method to return: "^result asString" I get a valid GUID for Word and a zero-GUID for Excel. Is anyone able to reproduce this? If so any ideas about the reason? To Andreas: Havent recently looked at the VM sources. When and how (parameters) is COM initialized in the windows VM (calls to CoInitialize() or CoInitializeEx())? I actually tried to put out a package that depends only on DefaultTextStyle, but I am getting string measuring problems if I switch to anything but Bitstream Vera Fonts -- really weird. Anyways, I will look more later at it, but the fix is escaping me right now short of installing this dependency. Regards, John

Hi Andrew, Sorry for the late response. Your changeset looks good. It completes the pattern I started with inspectorClass, thanks! The primitiveChangeClassTo:, I put in in Inspector>>inspect:, was only used by the debugger when inspecting a block closure (generated from the Closure Compiler). I now realize I should do this differently because I don't want Dictionaries, etc. to show as DictionaryInspectors but still as raw inspectors, so I will change this in my Closure Compiler (which makes a few changes to the debugger). So you may remove the primitiveChangeClassTo: if you want. I think it would only be useful if the same Inspector was used to inspect different objects at different times. Since we're in gamma for 3.7 now, should we begin more wide-spread testing of the 3.7 VM, e.g., by the general (non-VM-building) public? I can't seem to find a pre-built one for any platform.. ftp://st.cs.uiuc.edu/Smalltalk/Squeak/ - no http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5506 - no I always seem to have trouble finding it.. Google was no help. Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks, Chris

[BUG] Flap item labels are difficult to read

In a fresh 3.7gamma-5983 image, the labels on the items in the flaps are pretty hard to read. It looks like the font may be ComicSansMS (TrueType) size 6 or something. The 5980TTCFontSizeRepair update seems to have caused this, and doing "Language recreateFlaps" doesn't make a difference. (Quite likely that update "fixed" the labels to accurately show what they're defined as, but we need to change their size or something.) A quickie fix would be appreciated, to save me a bit of time while putting together the gamma-candidate. - Doug

[Q][Monticello] snipet for saving a mcz file

Hi, I have a question for the Monticello gurus on the list. I am trying to programatically write the last comitted version of a package to a mcz file and I made the following code snipet for that purpose: | package version | package := MCPackage named: 'Monticello'. version := MCVersion package: package info: package workingCopy currentVersionInfo. file := FileStream newFileNamed: (FileDirectory default fullNameFor: version fileName). version fileOutOn: file. file close. This do-it seems to work but what I would like to know if this is the right way of doing it. Big thanks Regards, Hernán
