Smalltalk at oopsla

Hello, Today is the last day of oopsla. It was a really cool surprise to see how many times Smalltalk was cited during talks and how many compliments it obtained. Here some particular moment I enjoyed: - Before the keynote of Mary Beth, James Noble said something like: "Eclipse tries to achieve something that Smalltalk did 20 years ago, and remains still behind". The room was completely full at that time. - The room where the Croquet workshop hold was completely full, even if the organization was a bit shaky (please, do not take it bad :-), this was really cool! The room was completely full, and it did not contains only smalltalkers, but also people who were just curious and wanted to learn more. - David Reed gave a talk on Croquet, and the room was really big, and was completely full. - Roel Wuyts was chair of the Symposium on Dynamic Languages. And again, the room was too small to contain all the attendees :-) Especially for the very last talk given by Brian Foote; the doors had to left open in order to make people standing outside able to listen. - Martin McClure organized a Squeak BOF. That was really cool. Again, some people came here just to learn more about squeak/smalltalk. I was also delighted to see that some technical presentations in the research tracks shown DrScheme into action. Kathryn did a demo using DrScheme, and it was really cool! Also, I felt that Smalltalk had more attention than Ruby and other Python. This oopsla was a wonderful opportunity to meet people in real. Keep going Smalltalkers! We have cool things to show, and we have to show them! I would like to give big hands to Roel and Martin to have organized their events. How to get access to Mac OS X fonts?

Hi, I'm a Squeak newbie. I'm very interested in discovering and learning more about Squeak. After downloading Squeak for Mac OS X, the first thing I want to set up is the font. I'm so used to the Mac OS X fonts that it'd improve the readability tremendously if I can use my Mac fonts. I searched the FAQ and email archive, but couldn't find anything that'd help me set up Mac font in Squeak. Is there something extra I need to set up before the Mac fonts would show up? Any help is greatly appreciated. -- Chris

Help needed: 16 and 32 bit BMP files

Hi Folks - I need some help for fixing an issue in BMPReadWriter. For writing proper test cases I need to have both, a 16 and a 32 bit version of the attached (24bit) bmp file. Unfortunately I have no software which actually creates 16 or 32 bit bmp files. If you have a way to create such files I would greatly appreciate sending me copies of those, and I will promise in return to speed up 16bit loading by, uh, say a factor of two or so (it's really inefficient right now but I do need a test case first). writeImageFile() without snapshot()?

So, recent versions of OSProcess have this neat trick of being able to fork and save the image in a background process, which means you can have a large long-running image - say, a Seaside server - drop a backup of itself to disk without, hopefully, skipping a beat. In theory, because of the copy-on-write forking that modern unices use, it should even be able to do this without allocating much extra memory as long as it does it quickly enough. However, since every snapshot is preceded by a full GC, which moves tons of memory around, in practice what I see is that memory usage doubles whenever I do the background save. How necessary is it to do the GC before a snapshot? Is it possible to do a writeImageFile() without a GC and safely use the resulting image, or does that violate some assumptions somewhere? Avi

[Balloon] questions

In my clumsy attempts at displaying circles, squares, polygons and text on a (Balloon) Canvas, I keep running into strange behavior that to me looks like canvas properties that are sometime updated and sometimes not, and sometimes not even set at all... Maybe this is systematic, but currently I am lost how to achieve my relatively simple goal. (in a previous post I mixed #drawRectangle:color:borderWidth:borderColor: with #fillOval:color:borderWidth:borderColor: and the resulting colors were not what I suspected. For some reason (why?) mixing these type of methods is an unusual thing to do...) Current problems: 1) Using drawOval:etc instead of fillOval:etc results in circles with correct colors. However, mixing circles and squares with text (using drawString:at:font:color:) results again in strange interference effects. See the code below. Displaying the string on another canvas is ok; displaying the string on the same canvas distorts the following display of rectangles and circles. Is drawString:at:font:color: a method of the #fillXXXX type, that should not be mixed with #drawXXXX methods?? If so, how to draw String then? 2) Is drawOval:etc the best way to draw circles with borders? Under some circumstances the borderColor doesnot appear (havent figured out exactly when). And anyway the results are not that visually pleasing - so I wondered whether there exist an alternative drawing method? As I am not sure these things are bugs and not features so I'll wait with posting them on Mantis. Launching scripts from a mac osx vm

Hi All, I can't launch any script from the squeak vm 3.7 (but also 3.8). Basically I do from shell: open -a 'Squeak 3.7.5Beta1.app' Squeak3.7-5989-full.image SmallScript.st, it opens the environment, but do not execute the script. Any hints? Hi I pushed two items in the update stream. - the first one load some modified version of MC (including the cacheFlushing) - the second one will load the script loader and load the latest scripts. marcus and adrian told me that this is working on their machines (= no conflict after loading). I need some people to let me know if the following work: - take 6693 http://ftp.squeak.org/3.9/Squeak3.9a-6693.zip. - do an update. - report the size of the image/changes and mention if there are conflicts after the load Thanks Stef

Feature Request - Arrow object

Hello I just write a little german beginners guide. Inside Squeak. The BookMorph and Matejs enhancements are very useful for this. During work I miss a small (and easy to implement??) object in Squeak. The Supplies-Flap contains some predefined objects, a rectangle, an ellipse or even a star. What about an customizable arrow? It would be cool to drag one into a presentation to indicate an important statement. What do you think? ciao Enno

Squeak (file system & project structure) newbie questions

Hello there! I am a really good Java programmer who is aspiring to learn Smalltalk, using Squeak. The current version of Squeak that I am running is: Squeak 3.86Beta6 I am running this implementation on Mac OS X Tiger... Several questions: 1. I installed Squeak in my hard drive at this location: /Developer/Smalltalk/Squeak3.8-MacOS-Full Using the book, entitled, "Squeak - A Quick Trip to ObjectLand" ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0201731142/ref=sib_dp_pt/ 104-5386346-0518331#reader-link ), I started creating projects based on the material in Chapters 2 & 3... When trying to save the ObjectLand.image file (after several mock projects) in the "World Menu" using both menu items, "save" and "save as...", I noticed that it saved the following files in my Squeak root directory ( /Developer/Smalltalk/Squeak3.8-MacOS-Full/ ): ObjectLand.1.changes ObjectLand.1.image ObjectLand.changes ObjectLand.image ObjectLand_segs Also noticed that it created a new directory (which is empty, by the way) right under the Squeak root directory called: ObjectLand_seqs Also noticed another directory under my Squeak root directory, called, Squeaklets, containing the following files: New Changes.001.pr New Changes.002.pr New Changes.003.pr New Changes.004.pr New Changes.005 New Changes.006 New Changes.gif resourceCache.map Can anyone tell me what these prospective directories + these files (including the extensions: images, .changes, .pr., & .map) mean? 2. When I tried to save new files in a brand new directory (some other location than Squeak root), using the following menu items "save project on file..." and "load project on file...", (belonging in the "World Menu") to: /Developer/DevProjects/SqueakProjects/ObjectLand I noticed the following files: New Changes.001.pr New Changes.002.pr New Changes.003.pr New Changes.004.pr New Changes.gif Why did it not save it as ObjectLand001.pr instead of "New Changes"? What are these .pr files and .gif files? Why can't I save everything (including .st files) in a directory, other than, the Squeak root directory? 3. Why do the "save" and "save as..." actions save to Squeak root instead of the location I specified the "save project on file..."? Sorry if this seems confusing, I just figured there would be an easier way to set up a project along with its file system structure.... Also, sorry, if these seem like such basic questions (I've only been using this lovely environment for two days, now!) Many, many thanks! -Unnsse
