Making Squeak look like Windows

Hi, I once saw a screenshot of Squeak that looked exactly like Windows. Since I'm using Squeak on Windows and switching all the time between it and Dolphin, the diffrences in the GUI get in my way all the time. How can I make it look and behave at least similar to Windows? Thanks

Newbie questions

Hi all, I just started with Squeak and SmallTalk and am enjoying programming in it for the first time in a long time. I have a couple of newbie questions, though that I have not found adequate answers for elsewhere. 1) What is the significance of the use of >> in many of your emails? Is this a SmallTalkism that I missed somewhere or is this a convention used to tie a Class name and a method name together in discussions? 2) How do I run Squeak in a non-ui mode? I have seen a few items talking about -headless on the command line. Is that all there is to it? Thanx, joe P.S. Imagine my surprise when, on my first day on the list, the ANN of a new leadership and all the followup mail hits me. Man, didn't know what to think about that. Fortunately (?) I am way to uninformed to converse on that topic intelligently and only hope that the best thing for the community and for Squeak comes out of it. :-)

Squeakers around the world: As tester of several things I noticed... When you check uploads in recent 3.8 images, you find what could end in a final status. But recent changes to String. AbstractString, ByteString, WhatIsAString, etc caused several troubles. I prepare a final image for students in SqueakRos , loading what we are using. So I warn to quality control team what : You could loss color of any text, (so Should could be useless). Or missing AbstractString cause what you have walkback trying to load RefactoryBrowser. And If you forced reload AbstractString from before changes, text is coloring again and RefactoryBrowser do not complaints but you begins to have the following error MultiByteFileStream: DNU #isSeparator. I have two semi identical images 6662. In one SVI from Steven Swerling is working smoothless and in the other not . I can't find what is different in both. Sure exist many more loading or executing oddities. I felt this issues MUST be solved BEFORE 3.8 was labelled "final". And I apologize one more time if I'm the only fool with this strange troubles Edgar "Advocatus Diaboli" P.D. I only have 15 different images with different sets today.

Runtime Traits?

Hi all, please forgive me if this betrays a terrible level of ignorance on my part, but I think there is benefit to be had in runtime traits injection, to coin a phrase. I am writing software to enable back testing of stock trading strategies. Each strategy makes use of a selection of technical indicators, and each strategies combination of stratgies is usually different. I am writing the technical indicators as traits, which layer over a simple Tick class that has open, high, low, close and volume accessors to represent the stock data. I would prefer to inject the relevant traits as required by the individual strategy, instead of rolling all the traits into one class. I'd just like to know what others think of traits being a compile time thing. And whether there might be value in mixing them in at runtime. I am also dimly aware of the potential for there being little different between compile time and runtime in smalltalk. Thanks for listening. Mike.

Where are system globals (Smalltalk and SystemOrganization)

Are Smalltalk and SystemOrganization "global variables". If so where are the system globals and how do I list them, within a browser and say to the Transaction window from the workspace ? Aaron

Switching to the new web site

New team leader for website Team? ASAP

Hi folks! Stephane Ducasse has expressed a desire to step down as team leader for the website Team, but he will still be active in the Team. As the assigned coordinator of that Team I now would like to find someone else willing to step up to the plate and take over. AFAIK the Team has a good base site in place running in Smallwiki and what is left is mainly to produce content and "get it out". I intend to be active in this part too - I have texts I have been working on that I want to contribute and we also now have the 3.8 released so the timing is good to get the website up and running. Of course, the current members of the website Team (the doers) have a... "priority" if any of you would like to take the leadership. But I am posting to squeak-dev too. In my opinion the most important thing is that the new leader have some near term time to spend so that we get this UP. regards, Göran PS. Report 3 is brewing, coming later today I think so that we all know where we are and where we aren't. ;)
