ESUG Awards 2007

Dear Smalltalkers, The 4th edition of the ESUG Innovation Technology Awards will be held at Lugano next august as part of the ESUG yearly conference. As, you might know, the goal of this competition is to have demos of cool software built using Smalltalk. I'd like to stress that every smalltalker can run for this contest. Apple's bridgesupport on OS X VM?

Hi, Looks like Apple has made a complete open-source project of its bridge support for gluing other languages to Cocoa, as used in RubyCocoa and PyObjC. Any chance we can bridge Squeak to it, and get back at Brad Cox for creating Objective-C in the first place? ;) http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/BridgeSupport Cheers, Tim

Monticello Versions and Bold Text

Recently, I've been having problem in some images where Monticello no long correctly bolds newer versions of code. After opening a repository, the left column now shows all loaded packages as bold rather than just loaded packages with newer versions available. The right column now bolds and underlines the loaded package, rather than just bolding newer packages as it did before. I have no idea why the sudden change, has anyone seen this before? Local SqueakSource Server

I am trying to install a SqueakSource Server on my home machine in order to try creating an email-based commit notifier. I have tried several combinations of 3.7 image, 3.8 image, and 3.9 images Things I have tried: - Loading http://www.squeaksource.com/ss/SqueakSource-dt.1020.mcz into a full 3.7 or 3.8 image. This Installs fine, but does not run because DynamicBindings is missing. - After installing DynamicBindings from SqueakMap onto a 3.8 image, the server fails when a page is loaded with: MessageNotUnderstood: UndefinedObject>>title. I am not sure how to get a traceback. - I could not test on a 3.7 image, because I cannot load SqueakMap; It tries to update to 2.2, and fails. - Following the instructions on the wiki page for http://source.squeakfoundation.org/ss/ fails because I cannot use SqueakMap; same problem as above - Following the instructions at http://osdir.com/ml/lang.smalltalk.squeak.beginners/2006-12/msg00098.html on a squeak-dev-118 image works until I load the package http://www.squeaksource.com/ss/GraphViz-pmm.43.mcz , which fails with a syntax error on MacOSGraphVizGenerator>>runWithSystemFramework: - Trying on the recommended squeak-dev-62 image, Monticello fails with an error when reading the KomServices package: MessageNotUnderstood: UndefinedObject>>readStream. - I try downloading the packages manually, and the web server says that http://www.squeaksource.com/ss/XML-Parser-mir.3.mcz cannot be found. So, I tried four methods of installing SqueakSource, and ran into 5 show-stoppers. Dynabook hw cost

Any HW hackers here? Has anyone computed what a Dynabook would cost? First, I'm interested in understanding why true Dynabook hardware has not been available. Is it just too costly? I think we can trace the reasons why the software side of a Dynabook has not been fulfilled (although, I trust that Viewpoints NSF grant will close this gap). I thought that something more powerful and a bit bigger than the Nokia N800 but smaller than today's typical small notebook would be available by now. But I can't find one. I gotta believe that companies like Toshiba have investigated this thoroughly. And, if so, they've come to the conclusion that there is no business. Or if not, maybe by their bureaucratic blindness they have totally missed this market. Second, I'd like to understand what the cost of a Dynabook would actually be in today's dollars. I think a true Dynabook is long over due. Today's hardware doesn't suffice. Either it's too underpowered, or too bloated. Too small, or too heavy. (and all too expensive!) Any thoughts about the specs of the Dynabook and why we are still waiting? (hmm... is the XO is close?... wonder if parts will be available) (I still have my Sony magic cap. Alternative Thread Schedulers

Hi all, I just read http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/5682 that Tim (I think it was) mentioned, and found the part about doing alternative scheduling with a higher priority thread interesting. The question I had was, in the example it says the high priority process can use Delay's to sleep while other processes are running, but what happens when a process does IO? Doesn't that cause the process to yield? What I am thinking is, if I were to make a scheduler process that manages all running processes, how can he find out every situation where a process yields in some way? It would be ideal if there was a Delay millisecondsOrUntilInterupt: type message. Is this a buglet? (SmallInteger>>printString related)

Hi! In playing around with SmallInteger>>printString (see bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=6512) I tested this code for calculating the length of the String: self log truncated + 1 ...but that doesn't work. The current code in my ChangeSet uses an unrolled binary search (nested ifs) which is 7x faster (#decimalDigitLength) so the above code is not something we would like to use, but I still wonder why it fails and what I would have needed to do about it to get it to work: 999 log truncated ===> 2 As expected. 1000 log ===> 3.0 As expected. 1000 log truncated ===> 2 Eh, what? Not expected! ...ok, yes, I know - Floats are the "tar pits of hell" when it comes to expected results - but... can someone answer if this is a bug or if I simply can't expect this code to work? regards, Göran PS. Strongtalk does in fact do SmallInteger>>printString almost exactly like my enhancement does (didn't peek, promise!) but does it around 5x faster than Squeak. :) I fired it up to look at how it does #log but log wasn't implemented. On the other hand Bryce tested Exupery on my code and it made a real difference - at least 2x better (not sure if he only tested printString). And then he mentioned an obvious improvement in Exupery that would make it even faster. Interesting method for comparing!

Hello everyone, 1. i'm searching for information or/and documentation about balloon3d its implemention details 2. and the problems it was designed to solve. 3. what details of hardware acceleration does it abstract, 4. and why does croquet does need an extra opengl ffi interface 5. (why ffi isn't that the slowest way to go compared to a plugin ?) any hints and every information is welcome faithfully dominic letz
