Unique all characters?

Hi All, having just stumbled across the fact that only characters with codes from 0 to 255 are unique I wondered whether anyone has considered doing the following: Character addClassVarNamed: 'LargeCodeCharacters'. *Character class methods for class initialization* *initialize* [*LargeCodeCharacters* := *WeakSet* new *Character class methods for instance creation* *value:* *anInteger* *"Answer the Character whose value is anInteger."* | *theCharacter* *existingInstanceOrNil* | *anInteger* <= 255 ifTrue: [*^**CharacterTable* at: *anInteger* + 1]. *theCharacter* *:=* *self* basicNew setValue: *anInteger*. *^*(*existingInstanceOrNil* *:=* *LargeCodeCharacters* like: * theCharacter*) ifNil: [*LargeCodeCharacters* add: *theCharacter*] ifNotNil: [*existingInstanceOrNil*] Yes this has the potential to create a lot of space overhead, but only for artificial codes that enumerate over all characters. I suspect that for most cases the actual set of active characters would be quite small. (Alternatives that are indexed by integers might also work well, e.g. a flat WeakValueDictionary that used a WeakArray for its values). Just a thought...

Problem getting bitmap fonts into the image

Hello list, I hope I'm appropriate. I'm having a rather hard time getting bitmap fonts into the squeak image. I'm using fonts named proggyfonts[1] for my terminals, emacs and other places where I need fixed-width fonts. And I would like to use them in squeak too. I just can't seem to manage it. I installed a pcf -> bdf converter, but the resulting bdf file didn't want to be read by the BDFFontReader. I tried most stuff that is in the wiki about bdf fonts, but the data seems to be from around 2000 and maybe aren't applicable any longer. For testing and sanity check (I'm sitting at the problem for over an hour now., I tried to use the helvica fonts that were used in the class comment of BDFFontReader (they were dated from 1990, so they would've been the ones the author used, I guess.) and they didn't convert either. Any help appreciated and thanks in advance. If TTF is a must, is there maybe a way to get bitmap fonts into that format without ending looking bah? :-) br, benny [1] http://proggyfonts.com/

Elections and elections team

Hi everyone. Last year I was the election team lead, and ran the election with Ron and a lot of help from others, like Cees and Ken. This year I'm stepping down as lead because I don't have the time, and don't want the election to be delayed (more?) because of it. I hear that Goran is willing to lead the election team this year, and I give his bid my full support - Goran has always cared about how this community works, and done important work on fixing what's been broken. If someone else wants the job, this is the time to say something. In fact, anyone interested in the elections should join the elections list, and open discussions there, and maybe help out. I'll still be there, of course. Anyway, I think the elections work, and aren't broken, but I'm sure they can be improved. But its time for someone else's perspective on this problem. Monticello via sftp on WinXP - options?

Is it possible to use an sftp repository for Monticello, and with what package? I found a Monticello cURL package on squeaksource, but it sounds non-Windows: "If you don't feel like compiling a new VM you can either dowload CurlPlugin bundle for the Mac VM or CurlPlugin for the Unix VM" Thanks - Sophie

Morphic 3 presentation at Smalltalks 2007

SSH Port Forwarding (Tunneling) in Squeak (was: SSH)

Picking up an old thread... Would like to use this to do a port forward. Today, I have a little Squeak app that talks to a MySQL database on the other side of a forwarded SSH port. I'm on windows, so I use plink (command line PuTTY): C:\bin\plink.exe -ssh -P 22 -l username -pw password -L 3306:mySqlServerIpAddress:3306 -N sslServerIpAddress (with placeholders for username, password, and the 2 IP addresses) This works, but I'd like to get an all Squeak solution (easier for me to deploy). Hopefully easier to keep up (plink goes away periodically). I started with: SSH runBy: 'username' to: 'sslServerIPAddress' port: 22 The first issue was the server wanted a password and I hadn't specified one. I couldn't find the appropriate place to hook in a password, so I hardcoded my password into this method: SSHUserAuthClientWaitingForResponse>>#sendPasswordUserAuthRequest | requestMsg | requestMsg := SSHUserAuthRequestMessage new userName: self connection userName; serviceName: 'ssh-connection'; methodName: 'password'; subMsg: (SSHUserAuthPasswordRequestSubMessage new "------>" password: 'password'; "was password: self connection password" yourself); yourself. self machine sendMsg: requestMsg. That worked (I get the banner from the server), but I know I need to find where the connection is set up to provide the password. Even with that hack in place,I get errors every time I type any character into the Teletype Morph. I suspect this is because the server isn't expecting a shell (-N). So my questions are: 1. Can you use this to forward a port? If so, do you have an example? 2. Where to set password if the server is expecting one (non-interactive). Package descriptions?

MCPackage itself seems to just have a 'name', nothing for package description. Is this handled somewhere else? I see a place for some docs for each version, but not for the package itself. Thanks - Sophie

Omni Browser too slow

Writing a large Collection of integers to a file fast

Hi, I'm looking for a fast way to write a large Collection of ints (over 6 million elements) to a file. My attempt was: aFile := CrLfFileStream fileNamed: aFilename. aLargeCollection do: [ :int | aFile nextPutAll: int printString, String cr. ]. aFile close. Unfortunately, this takes more than fifteen minutes. I suspect this is due to my implementation. Is there any smart way I can do this faster? Thanks, André
