The locally edited code was sent to the target replicated object as a text string and the replicated object saved it in a single instance variable, so each replicated object could have exactly one script. When the target object was triggered to run the code, it essentially did a "doIt" on the string. There wasn't anything more to it than that. Cheers, Dave

Image Management

Hey all, I have a giant pile of images from the last two years. Many of them have experiments I'd rather not lose, but I tend to meander in a Squeak image, and forget to name the image files well, so I basically have a lot of images that might have interesting changes, and no easy way to figure out which ones I want to keep around, or extract things from. I've gone through most of them manually. I'd like to be able to search an image for changes that have my initials attached to them, though, because poking around in a change sorter is perilous when there've been changes from the trunk (it's noisy.) I don't know enough about how/where changes are kept in the system to do that though. Any help would be much appreciated! I'd love it if I could inspect something in particular and find the data structure that my changes live in. -- Casey Ransberger

Reddit.st - In 10 elegant Smalltalk classes Implementing a Reddit style web application in Smalltalk Using Seaside, Glorp and PostgreSQL http://homepage.mac.com/svc/Reddit.st This is a tutorial showing how to implement a small but non-trivial web application in Smalltalk using Seaside, Glorp and PostgreSQL. Reddit, is web application where users can post interesting links that get voted up or down. The idea is that the 'best' links end up with the most points automatically. Many other websites exist in the area of social bookmarking, like Delicious, Digg and Hacker News. In 2005 Reddit switched their implementation from Common Lisp to Phyton. As a reaction I published a Lisp Movie (screen cast) called Episode 2: (Re)writing Reddit in Lisp in 20 minutes and 100 lines also known as Reddit.lisp - In less than 100 lines of elegant code. Although the title was provocative, to get attention and for fun, and this was lost on some people, the key message was just to show that it is perfectly possible to write nice web applications in Lisp and to give an example of how to do so. The reasons for their switch were social, not technical. Reddit.st is yet another variant of this example, reimplementing the example in Smalltalk. It adds persistency in a relational database, unit tests as well as web application components to the mix. The 10 main sections of this article follow the development of the 10 classes making up the application. The focus of the Smalltalk version is not so much on the small size or the high developer productivity, but more on the fact that we can cover so much ground using such powerful frameworks, as well as the natural development flow from model over tests and persistence to web GUI. I am pleased to announce a new release of Magma containing my updates since 1.1r1: - All underscore assignments have now been updated to ANSI assignments. - When opening the server, a file called "_open" is created in the repository directory, to indicate the repository is open. The file is deleted when the repository is closed gracefully. This is intended to help protect from accidentally letting two OS processes open the same repository files. - Resurrected MagmaDictionary! It is just like a Dictionary except that it inherits the properties of Magma's LargeCollections, such as size and concurrency. - Added Collection>>#asMagmaArray and MagmaArray>>#add:. - Added check for an additional way to run Squeak in headless mode: the "-vm-display-null" option. - Added MagmaSessionRequest class>>#signalNewReadStrategy: so that domains may signal new ReadStrategies to any listening sessions. - Added MagmaLocalLocation>>#findSession, a convenient counterpart to #newSession that first checks there is already a session open on that location and, if so, use that one. Otherwise, create and answer a new one. - Support for persistent, simple BlockClosures (e.g., with only references to arguments, not "self", any instVars or globals). - Choose automatically between an appropriate MaDictionary subclass, depending on whether the new Weak-Finalization mechanism from Igor is supported. - Several other minor fixes. WebClient + SqueakSSL = https

Folks - I've added the first round of https support for WebClient and I'm looking for beta testers / feedback. In particular if you're set up using (authenticating) proxies I'm curious whether WebClient behaves correctly. Assuming you've set up your Squeak environment, all you need is to: * Install the SqueakSSL plugin: http://squeakvm.org/win32/release/SqueakSSL.zip * Install SqueakSSL: (Installer ss) project: 'SqueakSSL'; install: 'SqueakSSL-Core'; install: 'SqueakSSL-Tests'. * Install WebClient: (Installer ss) project: 'WebClient'; install: 'WebClient-Core'; install: 'WebClient-Tests'; install: 'WebClient-Help'.
