My gut thinks FFI has been around longer than the releasing of memory feature -- not sure. -mmap size[mk] requests that a variable heap of at most size bytes be allo‐ cated. (The suffixes are as described for the '-memory' option.) squeak will initially allocate a heap that is large enough to hold the image, with a small amount of headroom. If at any time Squeak requires more memory for its image then addi‐ tional space will be allocated dynamically. Likewise, when mem‐ ory is no longer needed it will deallocated and returned to the system. The size argument places an upper limit on how big the heap can grow in this fashion. squeak uses a dynamic heap by default with the maximum size set to 75% of the available vir‐ tual memory or 1 gigabyte, whichever is smaller. Eliot, is the useMmap variable you referred to set by this argument? I tried launching my image with -mmap 700M but it still didn't seem to want to deallocate. Same with the Classic VM.

how/where is memory returned to the OS?

I have an image which needed to allocate 500MB of memory for a large operation. Now that operation is done and all objects have been reclaimed. According to VM I am now only using 200MB. (Smalltalk vmParameterAt: 2) max: (Smalltalk vmParameter at: 1) "221923374" However, when I look at my VM process in "top" or the System Monitor, it still says its >500MB. How does this work?

Spoon 3 beta 2 released

Hi all-- I've released Spoon 3 beta 2, see [1]. This is an important one, because it's the first one that opens a remote browser onto a small headless memory automatically. With this one it's pretty easy to browse around. So now there's a memory with development tools in it, and a small memory which takes the place of the old changes file (by remembering changes in an object database). Next, I’ll set up a third memory, a minimal environment which can the basis of a full Smalltalk distribution (e.g., Squeak 5). I’ll write instructions for creating unit tests for each package in our communities, and imprinting the code run by those tests into the minimal memory, thereby creating a module.
