CI for FileSystem

It took me long enough to realise that I hadn't saved the test image after loading FileSystem, thus leaking a process and borking the build, but realise it I did. Lo and behold, we have a CI build for FileSystem, showing 5 test failures: http://build.squeak.org/job/ExternalPackage-FileSystem/7/ FS.Tests.Core.FSPlatformResolverTest.testDesktop FS.Tests.Core.FSPlatformResolverTest.testDocuments FS.Tests.Disk.FSDiskFilesystemTest.testCopy FS.Tests.Disk.FSFileHandleTest.testIncomplete FS.Tests.Disk.FSFileHandleTest.testReadBufferTooLarge IIRC the first two fail because of platform issues or assumptions about from which directory Squeak is being run, and the last three are because of references to Xtreams. I don't mind things depending on Xtreams - I really, really like Xtreams - but from a aim-for-minimal-image perspective it's bad. Or, to put it another way, I'd be fine with replacing Streams with Xtreams, but that's far too much to do in 4.5. frank

They presented it today. What I gathered is that it's a extra-curricular project for students to "get their hands dirty" after going through his Programming Languages class. One aim is to make a small, tiny, file-based Smalltalk project (without use of an image). It seemed pretty rough, which is perfect for students to have something difficult to wrangle with. The conference had a fantastic first day. So many well-known Smalltalkers are here -- Allen and Rebecca Wirfs Brock, Dave Thomas, Dan Ingalls and many more.. Questions about Environments

Hi, I started rewriting Environments to use a different kind of dictionary, which won't get into an inconsistent state when a binding is modified. The rewrite is almost ready, but I still don't understand a few things: 1) Some methods use the instance variable 'references' to look up bindings, others use 'declarations'. After the rewrtie some tests don't pass, because the bindings don't get added to 'references', but they are present in 'declarations', so using the latter will make the tests pass. According to the class comment: declarations <IdentityDictionary> Bindings for globals that have been declared inside me references <IdentityDictionary> Bindings for globals that are used by methods compiled inside me. Which suggests that neither 'declarations', nor 'references' are good enough for lookup in case of #associationAt:, #associationAt:ifAbsent: or #associationOrUndeclaredAt:, #at:, #at:if*:, etc. There either need to be a dictionary which contains all the bindings visible from the Environment, or the class comment is wrong and 'declarations' is exactly that. In the latter case 'references' seems to be superfluous to me. 2) The only way for a binding to get into 'references' is to get into 'imports' first and get copied to 'references' in #bindingOf:ifAbsent:. But how does a newly compiled class's binding get into 'imports'? And why does that happen? The class comments suggests that only referenced (used by some methods) classes' bindings get into 'references', but new classes are not referenced by any method. 3) There are multiple classes being used for bindings including: ClassBinding, Global, Alias and Association (all bindings created in Undeclared are Associations, since it's a simple IdentityDictionary). The type of these bindings can change. Sometimes a class is created from a global (Global->Class) or a class gets declared (Association->Class), etc In these cases the class of the bindings should follow these changes. But AFAIK that's not happening now, and those would require a #becomeForward: send, which is rather slow. We could address these if the type of the binding would be stored in an instance variable, but that's a bit less flexible. Any ideas what to do with these? Cheers, Levente

Writing fast tests for things that call #future:

Now that we have a #future: send in PluggableListMorph >> #changeModelSelection:, we have a number of tests that fail because we check the state of such a list too quickly. For instance, MorphicToolBuilderTest >> #testSetListIndex says testSetListIndex self makeList. queries := IdentitySet new. self changeListWidget. self assert: (queries includes: #setListIndex). and the #assert: happens long before the future triggers. Now a completely stupid way of "fixing" this would be to add a Delay after the call to #changeListWidget. That would also smash the test run times, which are bad enough already. How can we write tests that run at full speed? One possible way might be to use a new SUnitProject whose #future:do:at:args: and #future:send:at:args: immediately trigger the #future: instead of delaying. That sound like it might bring its own problems. Other suggestions? frank

new Cog VMs available

CogVM source as per VMMaker.oscog-eem.296/r2732. Make the Production/Debug/Assert distinction static so one can find it with strings - vm. Add an ident for the ITIMER_HEARTBEAT linux VMs. Fix bug in eden filling/object overwrite checking. must use unsigned vars in the fill loop. Add a plugin to support the VMProfiler on linux (now Steve Rees has told us how to get proper thread priorities on newer linuxes). Replace broken primitiveUtcWithOffset with a version that works. Cast primitiveUtcWithOffset in terms of a new ioLocalSecondsOffset. Add stricter checking code to OSProcessPlugins. Add SqueakSSL plugin to nsvm plugins. Change -version output to print if a Production, Debug or Assert VM. Add some error checking to the UnixOSProcessPlugin's forkAndExecInDirectory prim. Eliminate some compiler warnings in the plugin. Eliminate some excessive use of push/popRemappableOop[:] in the SocketPlugin. Fix numberic option parsing in sqSocketSetOptions... (quite possibly the longest C function name I've ever seen). The old code only supported 1-digit length values, so setsockopt(SO_SNDBUF, 4096 didn't do what was expected at all (attempted to set the buffer size to 909717556, which is little-endian ascii for '4096', '4096' asByteArray unsignedLongAt: 1 => 909717556). Occasionally bizarre interactions cause the heartbeat's interval timer to disable. e.g. on CentOS linux when using PAM to authenticate, a failing authen- tication sequence disables the interval timer, for reasons unknown (setting a breakpoint in setitimer doesn't show an actual call). So a work around is to check the timer as a side-effect of ioRelinquishProcessorForMicroseconds. Add Callback LIFO ordering support to the new-style Callback return primitives to the IA32ABI Aline plugins. Fix some compiler warnings there-in. Improve the debug message printing in sqUnixExternalPrims.c so it prints line numbers. -- best, Eliot
