TextMorphs support display of text with emphasis. They also support reasonable text-editing capabilities, as well as embedded hot links, and the ability to embed submorphs in the text. Late in life, TextMorph was made a subclass of BorderedMorph to provide border and background color if desired. In order to keep things compatible, protocols have been redirected so that color (preferably textColor) relates to the text, and backgroundColor relates to the inner fill color. Text display is clipped to the innerBounds of the rectangle, and text composition is normally performed within a rectangle which is innerBounds inset by the margins parameter. If text has been embedded in another object, one can elect to fill the owner's shape, in which case the text will be laid out in the shape of the owner's shadow image (including any submorphs other than the text). One can also elect to have the text avoid occlusions, in which case it will avoid the bounds of any sibling morphs that appear in front of it. It may be necessary to update bounds in order for the text runaround to notice the presence of a new occluding shape. The optional autoFitContents property enables the following feature: if the text contents changes, then the bounds of the morph will be adjusted to fit the minimum rectangle that encloses the text (plus any margins specified). Similarly, any attempt to change the size of the morph will be resisted if this parameter is set. Except... PositionableStream >> #peekBack behavior

Hello, What is the expected behavior for a stream that is at position 1 when you send #peekBack? Intuitively I'd expect to get the first element of the underlying collection as a response. But instead I am getting nil. Here is an example that is failing: ``` elem := #(1 2 3 4). stream := ReadStream on: elem. first := stream next. first = 1. back := stream peekBack. back = first. ``` The last message is currently responding false. In Pharo this returns true, so there are differences. The currently implementation of PositionableStream >> #peekBack is: ``` peekBack "Return the element at the previous position, without changing position. Squeak wants you! Every year we elect the SOB (Squeak Oversight Board) consisting of seven members from our community. The current board members are: 1. Vanessa Freudenberg 2. Tim Rowledge 3. Or if you nominate someone else, make sure that person really wants to run. :) I will not put anyone on the candidate list until that person makes it known on squeak-dev that he/she intends to run. During this period, the candidates should ideally present themselves on squeak-dev, unless they have already done so, and the community can ask questions. I encourage you to reach out to potential candidates, people that are active in the community and represent your views, and ask them to run. Some people will not run without encouragement. Also, I know that some people wait to the last minute to run for the board to see if others will run but please consider getting this year off to a faster start and just jump right in! Date today versus DateAndTime today

Hi everyone, I am quite puzzled that the following answers false: DateAndTime today asDate = Date today. The reason seems to be the localOffsetSeconds. While DateAndTime today asDate has a local timezone, Date today has not. Shouldn’t this be consistent? The following answers false as well: Date today start = DateAndTime today I assume it is for the same reason. I suppose this is a feature, not a bug, but what is the reason for this behaviour? Squeak 6.0 | Release Planning

Hi all -- I suppose that many readers have noticed by now that we are currently preparing the next Squeak release. A few weeks ago, I volunteered for being the next release manager. Until now, I have been rather reluctant to make any concrete remarks on when the release will happen. Let me use the following lines to give you a brief update. The OpenSmalltalk VM looks good. We have our second release candidate and will hopefully make a third one soon. Our daily Trunk bundles include that OSVM RC2 already: - http://files.squeak.org/trunk/ - https://github.com/OpenSmalltalk/opensmalltalk-vm/releases/tag/202112201228 - http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/vm-dev/2022-January/037533.html The Trunk image is doing well. Maybe we can do our traditional "Feature Freeze" in the beginning of February. Before proposing a concrete schedule, I want to finish assessing a few higher-effort things including: - Objectland (http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2019-October/204437.…) - Localization (English, German, French, ...) - Jaromir's latest efforts around process scheduling - Eric's latest efforts around GIFReadWriter - Current state of ClipboardExtendedPlugin - Current state of IPv6 Other than that, I plan for announcing the upcoming "Feature Freeze" about 2 weeks in advance. Then we enter our beta-testing phase, in which I will make our latest "60Deprecated" package opt-in instead of opt-out (using the preference wizard). Then, about 1-2 weeks later if all goes well, I will update the .sources file of our final release candidate to SqueakV60.sources, package the release and open the Trunk for features again. :-) Next Trunk version will be 6.1alpha (using 61Deprecated for new deprecations). [proposal] migrating preferences to new images: UndefinedClass

Hi List, When loading my.prefs into a new base image, if the class being configured doesn't exist loading stops quite unglamorously. How about using a dummy superclass UndefinedClass that serves as the superclass of a class that hasn't been loaded? When the class isn't found, create it as a subclass of that. If the class is later loaded, class reshaping will change it into the appropriate class. For the purpose of storing the preference value in the meantime, we could use method rewriting like editing help topics, or putting it directly in Preference as a dictionary entry. By using a dummy superclass, you can browse for preferences set on unistalled software, as well as exclude them from release building. How does this sound?
