Yes this was a problem, and I have just added another update -- my chance to pay Andreas back for his help last night.
There's the scoop:
1973ColorCacheFix -- Dan Ingalls -- 25 March 2000 The method balancedPatternForDepth: was leaving colors with cachedDepth defined but cachedBitPattern == nil, a violation of the cache conditions.
