That's because you don't have VMMaker installed, but that's ok. You only need that if you are going to change any of the primitives and recompile the kernel, but I don't think you'll need to do it. richie PS: I couldn't change the default reply-to for the list yet. NOSifying any Squeak image

You'll need FFI installed in the image (Universes -> System -> FFI) Then open a Monticello browser, add an HTTP repository as: MCHttpRepository location: 'http://www.squeaksource.com/SqueakNOS' user: '' password: '' Then add another: MCHttpRepository location: 'http://www.squeaksource.com/Net' user: '' password: '' >From the first one load the last version, it'll complain about some missing things, like an SDCommand class. Ignore this, it's a missing poolDictionary, we'll fix it in the near future. Then from the 2nd repository load the latest version, this is TCP/IP by Luciano Notarfrancesco, it'll fix the other missing thing. Open a Transcript, save the image, and reboot. We've tested this with a good number of recent images, and it worked. We also tested it with etoys.image from the OLPC, and it didn't work for some reason, quite probably some uninteligence in how we installed FFI. enjoy! richie

I think there's a mode for the PS/2 mouse that will just tell it to send the scroller values. You would need to change the initialization code and then the IRQ handling and mouse event generation to handle the extra info. richie

If you want to do that, you'll have to link all the .o files and leave them together in a file suitable for the bootloader. I guess MacOS X' bootloader would take Mach-O, but I can't tell for sure. You could also find information on how to generate .efi file, which I think is what EFI bootloaders can boot. Oh! of course! you should not need to rebuild the kernel to rebuild the ISO image, and in fact, you should not need to rebuild the ISO image at all to test a new image. However, nothings ready to rebuild an ISO without recompiling... but, take a look at boot/Makefile, specially at the command mkisofs. That's what you need to run, and everything should be setup to run it. I think you'll have to run it from boot (NOT boot/iso.template/...) let me know how it goes! richie

VMWare appliacen released

I've just released yet one more version of the same ESUG presentation. This time it's a *VMWare Appliance* that you should be able to use with the free VMWare Player (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/) Using the VMWare disk mount utility (http://www.vmware.com/download/eula/diskmount_ws_v55.html), or directly from VMWare Workstation (if you own it), or in Linux using vmware-mount.pl, you can mount the included virtual disk, change the .image file, and reboot. This is currently the easiest and fastest way to test your modified bootable Squeak images. Enjoy! and please share your experience! richie

SqueakNOS @ ESUG & SqueakNOS @ OLPC

hi! you may be surprised to get an email on this list after, may be, two years, but there's been some news in the SqueakNOS front... I hope you are still interested. On one side, we've presented at ESUG 2008 (http://www.esug.org/Conferences/2008/) they've asked me the presentation material, but it's not still online. In any case, it was a bootable presentation, which you can download from the normal source (follow links from: http://people.squeakfoundation.org/person/gera/). Another very interesting news, is that at the ESUG conference we've got our hands in an OLPC, and we've managed to boot SqueakNOS on the OLPC (with help from Mitch Bradley). This has also been released, and can be downloaded following the previous link. The people at the conference where very interested in the project, and this is a big help and may boost the project a little bit forward. Hopefully we'll get some time to work on more stuff, we are currently trying to have USB and SD card support, what we'll put us a little step closer to persistency. Let's see where this new energy wave takes us :) richie
